Why choose the Bioinformatics Organization?

The Bioinformatics Organization is an international organization that promotes open-access in the field of bioinformatics by providing free and open resources for research, development and education so that such resources can be further developed. The Organization has a Web-based collaborative development environment (CDE) for bioinformatics projects that are developed in the spirit of freedom and openness (e.g., a program is distributed under an OSI-approved license).

Collaborative Development Environment (CDE)

With our CDE, Bioinformatics.Org offers a cornucopia of services to developers:

  • Advanced Web-based administrative tools providing easy maintenance for all aspects of your project:
    • Bug-Tracking System
    • Task Manager
    • News System
    • Discussion Forums
    • Public Surveys
    • File Release Management
  • An SSH account that provides basic shell functions, your own crontab, and access to your HTTP directory
  • A Web site for your project:
    • URL: http://bioinformatics.org/<yourproject>
    • Domain name hosting (mapping to our server)
    • Apache mods, SSL, PHP4, Perl, Python and CGI support
    • NEW: A wiki system installed by default
    • Detailed Web site statistics (optional)
  • Quota-less drive space (within reason)
  • Access to the MySQL or PostgreSQL DBMS from your shell account and web server
  • The Mailman mailing list manager
  • Your own Subversion (NEW) and CVS modules with shell-level access
  • A Web interface for examining Subversion and CVS modules
  • Full read/write access to your own FTP directory, available anonymously to the outside world
  • An email address for yourself:
    • Address: <yourname>@bioinformatics.org
    • IMAP4 access
    • Or alias the addresses to your current address

General services

We also offer services for developer and non-developer alike:

  • Bioinformatics.Org News Forum
  • Popular mailing lists:
    • BiO Bulletin Board
    • Bioclusters
    • Biodevelopers
    • Molecular Visualization
  • Various portal features (many under active development):
    • Wiki FAQ and Encyclopedia
    • Bookstore
    • Calendar of bioinformatics events
    • Polls
  • A Jobs Forum (with Curriculum Vitae services under development)
  • Internet-based tools for bioinformatics
    • Most of which happen to be projects already based at Bioinformatics.Org

Bioinformatics.Org vs. SourceForge.net

Bioinformatics.Org currently runs an earlier version of the SourceForge system, but we distinguish ourselves in the following ways:

  • Our focus is entirely on bioinformatics: We have tens of thousands of members with an interest in bioinformatics, making Bioinformatics.Org the largest international association in the field.
  • We host Web-based, server-side software, including PHP support and CGI support for Python, Perl and binary Linux executables (C/C++, etc.).
  • We host Web-based databases, including MySQL and PostgreSQL support.
  • Project members have shell-level access to Subversion, CVS, crontab and other resources.
  • Shell account use is not limited to software development.
  • Storage has no hard limit. We even host CD/DVD ISOs.
  • Users have POP3, IMAP4 and shell-level access to email (webmail coming).
  • We can accommodate special needs, because we are smaller and can keep track of members more easily. We also have much less traffic to bog down access.
  • Bioinformatics.Org is non-profit, and even our resources are open-source.

New features

Bioinformatics.Org will soon be rolling out some new features:

  • Bioinformatics special interest groups within the field of bioinformatics
  • An improved collaborative development environment.
  • A high degree of project categorization (ontologies) within the field of bioinformatics (SourceForge.net currently has one "bioinformatics" category)

Once logged into the system, you can register a new group. We invite you to do so today!
