Clearing Your Web Browser's Cache

A support document for FirstGlance in Jmol. Created August, 2025.

After you run FirstGlance for the first time, all of its code is stored on your computer or device in your web browser's cache. This enables FirstGlance to run much faster afterwards. But sometimes the contents of the cache get corrupted, preventing FirstGlance from working properly. One way this can happen is after the FirstGlance files on the server have been updated. The FirstGlance servers limit the cache lifetime of FirstGlance files to 24 hours. This means that repeated use of FirstGlance within a single day will be fast, but your first use on a later day may be slightly slower.

The instructions below are current in August, 2025. They may become obsolete later.

You can clear (delete) your browser's cache without deleting history, logins, cookies, etc. The only effect this will have, besides possibly correcting problems, is to slightly slow down the subsequent first loadings of web pages.

If you do not already have a bookmark to FirstGlance, you should go to http://firstglance.jmol.org and then create a bookmark.

iPads, iPhones (iOS)

Safari

Unlike for Safari on computers, you can delete only the cache for FirstGlance, without deleting cookies (your FirstGlance preferences) or logins, etc.

Apple macOS Computers

Chrome

Safari

Safari on computers does not allow you to clear the cache without deleting cookies. As long as you do this only for bioinformatics.org and/or proteopedia.org, all you will lose is your FirstGlance preferences (which you can then reset within FirstGlance). If you have a login for either site (not needed to use FirstGlance), you may need to login again.
