Opportunity: BIOINFORMATICS Scientist I/II (#922) @ The Broad Institute -- Cambridge, MA (US)
Submitted by Laura Bonfitto; posted on Monday, December 17, 2012

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    Overall Responsibility:
We work in a highly collaborative environment as a team of biologists, chemists, computational scientists, and engineers. We seek an experienced bioinformatics scientist to partner with the newly formed Therapeutics Development and Translational Science (TD/TS) Platform within the Broad Institute to provide rigorous data-analysis collaborative support for TD/TS project teams. The primary role is to enable TD/TS projects to leverage modern and next-generation algorithms, data visualizations, and user interfaces to integrate a diverse set of data types. The successful candidate will develop analysis methods and tools, perform basic research, and develop and maintain data-analysis pipelines to support multiple projects. The candidate will serve as a primary analyst on TD/TS projects, including method development and biological interpretation, and will co-author research papers with the Director, group members, and collaborators. The candidate should be expert at handling and analysis of high-throughput datasets, and integrating data from multiple diverse sources, bringing critical organizational, time-management, and data-management skills to the position.

    Characteristic Duties:
    • Organizes analysis project plans, determining and executing computational methods
    • Conceives, implements, and tests statistical models; works with wet-lab researchers to translate these models into testable experiments
    • Analyzes data from experiments; presents data and experimental results to collaborating scientists
    • Independently develops methods, organizing workflows, and coordinating other researchers toward rapid analysis prototypes
    • Develops data-analysis strategies, writes algorithms, and deploys computational tools for the exploration of high-dimensional datasets
    • Explores novel data representation modes with an emphasis on integrating diverse data types
    • Serves as a primary point of contact between the Computational Chemical Biology Research Group and the TD/TS Platform
    • Performs complex analysis and experiments to evaluate and troubleshoot new datasets
    • Interacts with bench scientists to complete analyses and interpretations, prepares materials for reports and presentations, and presents results at review meetings and scientific conferences.
    • Works independently and collaboratively toward successful publication of results
    • Researches, assesses, and standardizes processes for analysis tools and software
    • Proposes and implements upgrades to existing processes to enhance analysis result quality

    REQUIREMENTS

    • Ph.D. in mathematical, physical, or computer science or an advanced degree in chemistry or biology
    • Bioinformatics Scientist I - 1-3 years of experience involving computational analysis and visualization
    • Bioinformatics Scientist II - 4+ years of experience involving computational analysis and visualization.
    • Ability to integrate different specialties (cheminformatics, high-throughput screening, gene expression arrays, systems biology) is paramount; prior experience with more than one of these is strongly preferred
    • Ability to translate high-level data-processing and -analysis directions into concrete tasks and execute
    • Experience with scientific computing software (MATLAB, R, etc.) required
    • Experience implementing custom computational tools and software for bioinformatics or cheminformatics required
    • Familiarity with domain-specific software tools (Pipeline Pilot, GeneData, GenePattern, etc.) strongly preferred
    • Must possess strong organizational skills and an affinity for problem solving
    • Excellent written and verbal communications skills, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively are strongly preferred
    • Must possess ability to manage multiple simultaneous long-term computational projects while meeting frequent project deadlines
