    Opportunity: BIOINFORMATICS Network Orchastrator @ CPGR -- Cape Town, South Africa

    BACKGROUND

    The Centre for Proteomic & Genomic Research (CPGR) seeks to hire a Bioinformatics Network Orchestrator. As Bioinformatics Network Orchestrator you will be responsible for designing, building and maintaining an entire Bioinformatics value network. This network will be comprised of internal and external resources, including bioinformatics specialists, statisticians, programmers, system administrators, and developers; it can include individuals as well as entire organisations, public, private and tertiary institutions; it will have relationships with partners all over the world.

    You will be responsible for the day to day operations and health of the CPGR bioinformatics value chain(s), generated across the entire network. You will coordinate with an internal Bioinformatics team and external partners, as well as with project managers who interface with customers. Your goal will be to design, create and maintain a portfolio of seamless bioinformatics value chains, catering to the needs of projects and external clients. Your will achieve this by way of engaging customers and understanding what their needs are. Your objective is to build a networked Bioinformatics service-delivery engine, rendering the CPGR agile and resilient in view of demand, opportunities and technological change.

    You will work in a highly self-sufficient manner, engaging with project managers, academic scientists or private companies on a regular basis. You will also be very comfortable in fulfilling additional roles in the organisation but will always be focused on achieving your primary goals and working in a customer-centric fashion.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Development of Bioinformatics value network, aimed at facilitating a seamless service delivery to customers in academia and industry
    • Creation of a Bioinformatics value network performance evaluation and management scheme
    • Development and maintenance of relations with key network partners
    • Preparation of marketing materials
    • Development and maintenance of relations with key customers and other stakeholders
    • Identification of needs and opportunities in relevant markets and customer groups
    • Participation in the development of strategic plans at the CPGR
    • Management and monitoring of cost, quality, and turnaround, amongst other customer satisfaction criteria
    • (Co) Creation of grant applications to national and international funding organisations and preparation of business plans for capacity enhancement and organisational growth.

    REQUIREMENTS

    • Masters or PhD degree in computer science, mathematics, statistics, bioinformatics, or equivalent
    • Candidates with basic management training and/or a business degree will be preferred

    PREFERENCES

    Preferred Experiential Background:
    • Demonstrated success as manager and team builder
    • Practical experience in managing diverse teams of bioinformaticists, developers, programmers and statisticians
    • Ability to communicate complex content to a wide range of audiences
    • Experience with automation for data analysis of very large and complex data sets
    • Good understanding of the South African research environment and familiarity with challenges pertaining its National System of Innovation (NSI)
    • Strong statistical and data analysis skills
    • Very good understanding of relevant Bioinformatics technologies, algorithms, tools, software, and application
    • Excellent communication skills, verbally and in writing
    • Proven ability to build relationships with a diversity of stakeholders
    • Publication record in the field of bioinformatics and Computational biology is a plus, not a must
    • Experience with the design and implementation of computational/IT development projects
    • Experience with or formal training and/or certification in commonly used project management techniques (PMP/PMI) is a plus
    • Knowledge pertaining lean/agile software development (scrum) is a plus

    The CPGR is a specialist not-for-profit contract research organization established in South Africa through funding by the Technology Innovation Agency (TIA) to provide support and services to the life science and biotech community. It is based on an initiative by the Department of Science and Technology (DST) to boost the development of a bio-economy in South Africa. The CPGR combines state-of-the-art information rich genomic and proteomic ('omics') technologies with bio-computational pipelines, and biological models, to create unique solutions in the human health and the agri-biotech sectors.
