Opportunity: COMPUTATIONAL BIOLOGIST (#972) @ The Broad Institute -- Cambridge, MA (US)
Submitted by Laura Bonfitto; posted on Monday, February 11, 2013
BACKGROUND
The Broad Institute was launched to pioneer a new model of collaborative biomedical science that would transform medicine. To accomplish these goals, we have built an amazing team of talented Broadies who work together to realize this transformation.
The Broad community includes professional scientists from many disciplines, administrative staff, and students. We seek to cultivate an interdisciplinary, goal-oriented work environment that unleashes scientific creativity and empowers our people to pursue ambitious and critical projects. Our work transcends traditional academic boundaries, giving Broad employees and affiliates access to an unparalleled biomedical research community across the Harvard and MIT communities and beyond.
We are always looking for new Broadies to join our team and help us tackle important problems at the cutting edge of science. The Broad Institute is committed to providing its employees with a competitive compensation and benefits package. We recognize the need for our employees to have a balance between work and personal life. To that end, our benefit plans and options reflect our desire to promote an environment that supports the health, diversity, and general well-being of our employees. All Broadies also have access to world-class research and state of the art technology and are fully supported in their professional development, pushing the envelope for further growth.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Overall Job Description:
Our group recently developed a technology (Hi-C) for reconstructing the three dimensional architecture of the human genome inside the cell nucleus. This technology relies on proximity ligation followed by high-throughput sequencing. We are now working to extend this technology to probe proximity ligations between DNA, RNA, and other cellular components.
We are looking for a highly motivated computational scientist whose role will include the interpretation of data coming from these and similar high-throughput experiments in terms of the spatial arrangement of cellular components and their role in genetic regulation. You will also need to be able to comprehend complex biological experiments and use that understanding to help refine experimental protocols. The successful candidate will be expected to work regularly with a wide range of large-scale datasets and complex codebases in the effort to do outstanding research. The position involves mixture of algorithm design and implementation, rapid prototyping on data sets, analysis of data sets, creation of web-based interfaces and computational infrastructure, interaction with a wide range of laboratory personnel, and writing for internal use and publication.
You will work in an intense, exciting environment, tackling a wide range of critical issues at the frontiers of contemporary science.
Characteristic Duties:
- Work with team to rapidly design and prototype algorithms on large-scale data; implement and optimize successful algorithms.
- Contribute to and maintain shared, documented, and reusable codebases.
- Prepare written reports and proposals for internal use and publication.
- Ability to solve complex problems.
- Excellent communication skills.

- Strong organizational, time management, and project management skills required.
- Must be able to work independently as well as part of a team in a fast-paced, highly collaborative environment.
- Must be able to interact professionally and collaborate with computational, experimental, and theoretical scientists with expertise spanning a range of disciplines.
- Creativity, curiosity, and the desire, persistence and ability to create scientific advances required.
REQUIREMENTS
- Exceptionally deep computational understanding and abilities. Must have strong mathematical and abstract thinking skills, and hands-on ability to turn ideas into highly readable, elegant code. Strong statistical background preferred.
- PhD in math, physics, computer science, or comparable research experience required.
- Strong C++ programming skills and experience in Unix/Linux environment required.
- Knowledge of JavaScript, Python, and MySQL a plus.
- Experience in industry is a plus.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills needed.
- Must be capable of self-directed research within broader goals set by group.
