    BACKGROUND

    Under the direct supervision of the research staff the student assistant will receive training in Techno Economic and Carbon Footprint analysis using software developed at the DOE. The student will also learn about and work if appropriate after proper training in pilot-plant scale lignocellulosic/algal biomass processing, novel feedstocks, fermentation and recovery for the production of advanced biofuels. Training will include scientific principles, safety, good laboratory practices, data recording/analysis and laboratory maintenance.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Develop and use software programs for techno economic and carbon footprint models based on information generated at ABPDU, obtained from literature or provided by ABPDU clients and collaborators.
    • Record (notebooks, batch records), evaluate, interpret and report data including computational studies requiring skills such as graphs and database management. Programming skills are desired. Must have great attention to detail.
    • Help in preparing publications and presentations.
    • Use good communication skills and problem-solving skills to address assignments while must follow directions and work efficiently/accurately.
    • Attend meetings convened by the laboratory manager and those to provide safety instructions.

    • Attend work on time as determined by the supervisor, work actively with all ABPDU staff members, and complete tasks in a timely manner. Be receptacle to constructive feedback from supervisor.
    • Be alert for potentially unsafe behavior, practices, set-ups, and situations. -Correct them if appropriate or bring them to the attention of the supervisor if you are unsure of the proper procedures to be used.
    • In working in the laboratory, follow proper use of safety goggles, be familiar with MSDS information, proper handling of chemical spills, proper handling of broken glassware, proper collection of chemical waste for disposal, and proper disposal of non-hazardous laboratory waste.

    REQUIREMENTS

    • Successful completion of chemistry, biology and basic engineering course(s), which are appropriate with the assignment as a student assistant while demonstrating satisfactory progress toward a science/engineering degree.
    • Experience in chemical/biological techniques and related equipment. Experience in a laboratory/pilot plant setting involving the assembly, use and maintenance of special laboratory equipment desired.
    • Have a positive attitude demonstrating flexibility and to be a team player. Must be organized and able to multitask.
    • Ability to work independently.
    • Knowledge of advanced engineering computer application such as Super Pro, ASPEN, ect.
    • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. weight frequently.

    COMPENSATION

    The hourly wage ranges from $11.24 to $16.06 for undergraduate students and from $17.30 to $29.15 for graduate students, depending upon years of education completed. Applicants are responsible for housing and travel expenses.
