Submitted by Jeff Todd; posted on Tuesday, April 23, 2013

    Submitter

    BACKGROUND

The Fermentation Engineer will lead activities related to the ABPDU fermentation projects from initiation through product delivery for recovery, including planning, setting schedules, training assistants, conducting activities and submitting reports. These activities will be planned and conducted considering resource optimization and achieving project goals in time and within budget. This position will also provide fermentation technology expertise in conducting within the ABPDU and communicating with clients the technology transfer, adaptation, development and demonstration of fermentation processes for the production of biofuels and chemicals to develop biorefineries from diverse feedstocks. This individual will be responsible to design, prepare documentation (SOPs, Batch Records), select and maintain equipment and develop methods in collaboration with the analytical team to monitor nutrient consumption, metabolite accumulation, and product generation. Additional research goals include developing and applying bioprocess engineering tools for fermentation technology development/demonstration and the design/execution/documentation of novel processes for microbes, enzymes and other biologics related to the production of biofuels and biochemicals. The incumbent will also write publications and help author grants and patent applications.

This position will manage the day-to-day activities of the fermentation team providing technical/career guidance and training to persons assigned to the fermentation unit and to other staff members assigned to the fermentation area.

When designated by the Project Manager, this individual with act as the owner for ABPDU projects providing leadership to technical activities, assistance to business development and serving as the communication link with the client during the execution of the assigned project. Coordination of activities with the deconstruction, depolymerization, fermentation, recovery and analytical staff acting as leader of a cross-functional matrix team will be essential for the success of projects owed by the fermentation engineer.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Plan and execute projects and experiments for the fermentation aspects of APBDU projects coordinating these activities with those in the pre-treatment, analytical and fermentation areas.
    • Act as project owner for assigned projects including communications with clients, proposal preparation/review, resource planning, periodic meetings and reports as described in the proposal.
    • Use statistical design of experiments (JMP or similar software) where necessary.
    • Maintain detailed experiment and pilot plant records (notebook, batch records), collect/analyze/interpret data and report findings in written reports and oral presentations.
    • Follow the safety guidelines of LBNL; participate in and contribute to continuous safety improvement.
    • Select equipment and contribute to its routine maintenance and of the laboratory facilities in the fermentation area. Be on-call for emergencies 24/7.
    • Perform system suitability testing, statistical process control, root cause failure analysis, and other problem solving and prevention techniques.
    • Participate and occasionally lead group meetings for the staff and clients including PowerPoint presentations requiring good verbal and written communication skills.
    • Supervise, train and lead the workflow of research associates and students providing oversight and mentorship with experimental design, trouble shooting and other project related concerns. Ensure EHS compliance for the laboratory and direct reports.

    • Ability to lift 50 lb weight.

    REQUIREMENTS

    • Experience with the application of chemical/biochemical engineering, bioanalytics, microbiology and industrial fermentation process design/optimization/performance at all scales of operation (to 400L) supplemented with familiarization with industrial biomass pretreatment and recovery (solvents, biofuels, proteins) technologies.
    • Strong problem-solving capabilities with demonstrated ability to present novel methods and techniques to solve problems within broadly defined objectives.
    • Strong analytical skills, with the ability to present data in a coherent manner, suitable for inclusion in peer-reviewed publications.
    • Documentation of data, evaluation and interpretation of results, experimental batch record writing and submission of reports as required.
    • Proficiency in computers and associated software such as Microsoft Office, JMP and databases. Familiarization with techno-economic analysis.
    • Strong written and oral communications skills, with the ability to effectively guide the research efforts of junior staff.
    • Ability to work efficiently and productively in a team environment with minimal supervision

    PREFERENCES

    • PhD. in Chemical/Biochemical Engineering, Microbiology, Microbial Physiology or Biochemistry with previous (1-3 years) industrial fermentation experience is highly preferred. A B.S. degree in the fields mentioned supplemented with 15-20 years for industrial fermentation experience and management could qualify.

    TERMS

This is a 1-year, career-track term appointment that may be renewed to a maximum of five years and that may be converted to career based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds, and ongoing operational needs.
