Opportunity: Bioinformaticist / Enzymology Database Architect @ Arzeda -- Seattle, WA (US)
Submitted by Alexandre Zanghellini; posted on Tuesday, May 07, 2013

    BACKGROUND

Arzeda is seeking a motivated bioinformaticist who wishes to work in a creative and extensively multi-disciplinary team environment. Arzeda is a young and dynamic biotech start-up at the forefront of the "green" chemistry revolution, developing transformational products and inspired solutions to a sustainable future. Leveraging our core expertise in computational protein design, experimental biochemistry and synthetic biology, we design novel enzymes and metabolic pathways to ferment renewable feedstock into bio-based chemicals. Arzeda has developed its own proprietary product portfolio. Following an Open Innovation model, Arzeda is also involved in select industrial collaborations with leading chemical and agricultural multinational companies.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

The successful candidate will play a critical role in the development of new computational tools at Arzeda to rapidly and optimally design novel metabolic pathways. In particular, she/he will lead the design, implementation and population of enzymology databases and participate in their integration with Arzeda's proprietary software pipeline. At the junior scientist level, she/he will be responsible for:
    • Understanding and critically reviewing existing enzymology, biochemical and structural data
    • Defining and implementing data models
    • Scripting automated database population systems
    • Manually curating the enzyme databases to ensure data quality

    REQUIREMENTS

The successful candidate will hold an MS (preferably) or BS in bioinformatics, biochemistry or chemistry. Excellent proficiency in a scripting language (preferably Perl or Python) as well as a working knowledge of UNIX systems is required. Proven experience in cheminformatics and/or bioinformatics, as well as enzymology and SQL database architecture is a big plus. Experience with structural biology or molecular modeling is also very desirable, but not required.

The successful candidate must be willing to work in a small, driven environment, be able to work autonomously and possess strong interpersonal skills. Ability and willingness to work in a team is absolutely necessary. Finally, Arzeda seeks and greatly values a strong desire to learn, innovate and be continuously challenged

    TERMS

The candidate must be authorized to work full-time in the US.
