Opportunity: Informatics Analysis Project Manager (#206182JC) @ Baylor College of Medicine -- Houston, TX (US)
Submitted by Roxanne Reyna; posted on Friday, May 10, 2013

The Human Genome Sequencing Center at Baylor College of Medicine (Baylor HGSC) is one of three large-scale sequencing centers funded by National Institutes of Health. As one of the three major centers in the United States, Baylor HGSC provides a unique opportunity to work with cutting edge genomic science. We continuously seek individuals who are looking to work in a diverse research environment that supports ongoing genomics research, improvements in sequencing technology and genome analysis.

As DNA sequencing technologies have improved over the last few years the rate of sequence production has increased exponentially, transforming DNA sequencing and dramatically increasing the computational requirements for sequence production. To handle the coordination of projects and systems infrastructure necessary to respond to the growing demands of large-scale DNA sequencing, we are currently seeking an Informatics Data Analysis Project Manager who will be responsible for the production and submission of sequence data.

Duties will involve coordination of the activities of a group of bioinformatics developers, insuring the successful operation of a sequence analysis production pipeline that moves data from the sequencing instrument to our SAN, maps the data and produces .bam files (with appropriate tags and metadata to prepare for submission), performs sample-concordance QC, and ultimately provides submission-ready data at the sample and/or project level.

There will be extensive interaction with the laboratory sequence production and software engineering groups within the HGSC, and also with a wide variety of external scientific collaborators.

The successful candidate should have a strong background in high-performance computing, with a focus on data flow and analysis automation. Experience with bioinformatics or statistics is desired. In-depth understanding of genomic data sets (DNA sequence, copy number or expression) is advantageous.

In this position, the candidate will need to demonstrate independent thinking and have close interactions with other members of the Center. Project management experience and excellent communication skills are also necessary and critical for this position.

Bachelor's degree in a related field, or equivalent. Preferred: An advanced degree in quantitative science.

Experience with Unix shell script, Ruby, Java, and PBS, proven ability to work effectively as a leader in a team environment, and excellent communication skills (both oral and written).
