    Opportunity: Director of Biomedical Informatics @ All Children's Hospital -- Johns Hopkins Medicine -- St. Petersburg, FL

    The Johns Hopkins School of Medicine (SOM) is recruiting a Director of Biomedical Informatics to a full-time faculty position at All Children's Hospital-Johns Hopkins Medicine in St. Petersburg, FL, to shape the future of health care through informatics. The candidate should have interest and knowledge in pediatrics, with experience and skills biomedical informatics. The candidate should expect to engage in interdisciplinary efforts in the research, education, and clinical quality/safety pillars of this tertiary-care pediatric academic medical center. The candidate will be expected to develop his/her own line of investigation in biomedical informatics and to maintain this investigation via the pursuit of independent funding.

    The Director of Biomedical Informatics will report to the Vice Dean for All Children's Hospital and collaborate closely with the Director of Research. The Director of Biomedical Informatics will provide key content expertise to inform a collaborative vision among hospital and academic leaders for the role of biomedical informatics in clinical quality and safety, research and education (and their synergies), and will take responsibility for executing this vision. In addition to a primary tenure track faculty appointment in the appropriate school and department within Johns Hopkins University, the candidate is envisioned to have a joint appointment in the Johns Hopkins Division of Health Sciences Informatics.


    The candidate will:
    • Lead and collaborate in the design, execution, analysis and interpretation of biomedical informatics quality improvement projects and investigator-initiated biomedical informatics studies.
    • Work collaboratively with Quality and Safety Leadership, Research Leadership, and Chairs of Medicine and Surgery to make strategic decisions re: national/international cooperative database purchases, participation/leadership, and discontinuation as warranted.
    • Work collaboratively with Quality and Safety leadership and Research leadership (including Institutional Review Board) to develop and oversee processes for, and execution of, pipelining project data, from protocol development through data collection and analysis, including EMR-based data queries/analyses/reports, and, including developing and overseeing a team of data analysts.
    • Work collaboratively with Quality and Safety leadership, Medical Informatics leadership, and CIO to implement interfaces among the EMR, disease/condition-specific standardized clinical care repositories and the DataWarehouse, and lead the development of standardized reporting on disease/condition-specific and aggregate quality and safety outcomes from these pathways, via the DataWarehouse.
    • Demonstrate early understanding of research or development team goals and work effectively toward achieving them; has ability to participate on multiple project teams and contribute to defining informatics -related aspects of overall program goals.
    • Work with large datasets; identify opportunities to integrate across disparate datasets to create new synergies.
    • Independently perform investigation in biomedical informatics that may be clinically-applied or methodological in nature.
    • Prepare clear technical reports, publications and oral presentations. Independently communicate results in the form of reports and or presentations; presents responsibly and defends own work at scientific meetings; may deliver updates to senior level management in context of overall project goals.
    • Comply with all applicable regulations, policies, and Standard Operating Procedures; ensure that work performed in area of responsibility is conducted in a safe and compliant manner; maintain proper and complete records.
    • Assume responsibility for direct reports as needed including recruiting, managing, mentoring and developing scientific staff; may direct and oversee experimental design and results of technicians and junior level researchers and clinicians.
    • Keep abreast of relevant literature and serves as resource in area of specialized expertise; develop and maintains outside visibility; participate in national/international biomedical informatics societies and councils.
    • Contribute to departmental administration; demonstrate fiscal responsibility with respect to cost of projects, technology, external collaborations, and travel.


    MD or PhD (Postdoctoral experience preferred) and 5 years of experience as a biomedical informatician with a track record of results that impact programs, team directions, and group activities/procedures. Demonstrated experience leading quantitative and qualitative outcome analysis with an interdisciplinary team. Expertise with and understanding of I2B2 (Informatics for Integrating Biology and the Bedside) National Computing Center. Strong knowledge of HIPAA regulations and their implementation; CITI or equivalent HIPAA training certification. Strong experience with EMR including Cerner and/or Epic, and DataWarehouse. Understanding of process improvement and continuous quality improvement processes and methodologies.


    • Publication record in informatics
    • Proven track record leading complex technical projects
    • Strong background in data analysis & statistical modeling
      • Expertise with computational bioinformatics tools such as BLAST, SMITH-WATERMAN, pfam, ClustalW
      • Expertise with genetic databases such as NCBI, EMBL, ENSEMBL, IMGT, etc.
    • Strong software engineering skills
