Opportunity: Senior Researcher -- Predictive Medicine @ NICTA -- Melbourne, Australia
Submitted by Rhiannon Moses; posted on Friday, June 21, 2013

NICTA is seeking to recruit a Senior Researcher into its Health and Life Sciences team to help lead our program in Predictive Medicine.

The mission of NICTA's Health and Life Sciences team is to advance the understanding of human diseases and to improve the health and well being of Australians through development of transformative and innovative ICT technologies for healthcare.

Our team has strong and complementary expertise in diagnostic genomics, bioinformatics, text mining and biomedical informatics, and computational modeling and systems biology.

We are seeking to hire an exceptional computational biologist to work across these teams and in collaboration with our clinical and life science partners, to bring an integrative focus to our research in cancer systems biology and personalized cancer care.

Future cancer care will involve design of personalized treatment strategies and therapeutic approaches. This will require derivation of a patient's personalized genomic profile, identification of critical mutations and corresponding cellular biochemical pathways using relevant biomedical literature, and integration of this knowledge with population data and clinical information. Many of the tools required to achieve this in a very short time window required for clinical decision making are in their infancy, and major developments are needed.

This is an exciting opportunity to play a leading role in the research and development of new technologies for healthcare, benefiting from the depth and diversity of life sciences expertise at the Parkville Precinct and NICTA's expertise in ICT.

The successful candidate will be a computational biologist with a track record of excellence in research, who takes a hands-on problem solving approach and who is comfortable working in a collaborative and highly interdisciplinary environment.

They will have a PhD and a minimum of 3 years post-doctoral experience in Computer Science, Bioinformatics, Systems Biology, Mathematical or Computational Biology, Computational Linguistics, or a related field, with a proven research contribution evident by a strong record of publications. Prior experience in practical handling of genomic data, in particular Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) data, is critical. Demonstrable skills in communication and teamwork are also essential.

Good programming skills and expertise in biological data analysis, machine learning, data mining, or probabilistic techniques would be advantageous. Previous experience in biomedical or molecular biology applications and a demonstrated history of innovation are highly desirable. Demonstrated experience in developing research agendas and supervising research students would be valuable.
