    Opportunity: Postdoctoral Fellow: Cancer Genomics and Transcriptomics (#1788) @ The Hospital for Sick Children -- Toronto, ON, Canada
    Submitted by Adam Shlien; posted on Monday, July 22, 2013

    BACKGROUND

    The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto is looking for a talented and motivated Postdoctoral Fellow to lead a research project in pediatric cancer genomics. The successful candidate will join Dr. Adam Shlien's group, a new research team employing modern sequence-based techniques including whole genome and transcriptome sequencing to better diagnose and treat childhood cancer. The group works closely with The Centre for Applied Genomics, the Division of Molecular Genetics, and the Department of Hematology/Oncology and maintains close ties with the Cancer Genome Project at the Sanger Institute.

    The lab is working on a number of projects, whose aims include:
    • Understanding the transcriptional consequences of somatic mutation in cancer;
    • Understanding the timing and processes that give rise to mutations in pediatric cancers;
    • Developing novel informatics methods for the analysis of thousands of sequenced cancer specimens with an emphasis on integrative analyses;
    • Working with the Hospital for Sick Children's diagnostic lab to incorporate next-generation sequencing into routine oncological practice.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    The Postdoctoral Fellow will be expected to carry out independent research in one or more of the Lab's core areas. The Candidate's responsibilities will involve coordinating the acquisition of data, managing extremely large datasets, developing novel methods for somatic analysis, and ultimately, deriving biological insight which will be submitted for publication. The Postdoc is expected to work with other members of the Lab and collaborators.

    REQUIREMENTS

    The candidate will have a PhD in a relevant field such as cancer biology or bioinformatics, a passion for research with a solid publication record, and proven computer programming expertise. Experience with genome-wide data is necessary and knowledge of next-generation sequencing data analysis is an asset. Familiarity with statistical genomics methods and software are also an asset. The candidate will possess excellent communication skills and thrive in a collaborative team.

    The Postdoctoral Researcher will enjoy working on challenging problems, and will benefit from an intellectually stimulating and very well-resourced environment in the Hospital for Sick Children's new Research Tower, located in downtown Toronto.
