    Opportunity: Associate Bioinformatician @ Partners Healthcare -- Cambridge, MA (US)

    BACKGROUND

    The Partners HealthCare Center for Personalized Genetic Medicine (PCPGM) is a leader and innovator in helping realize the promise of personalized medicine by accelerating the integration of genetic knowledge into clinical care. The PCPGM is tasked with translating the latest genetic discoveries into routinely orderable genetic tests that are used to improve clinical decision making for patients around the world.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Assist in building different modules of software pipelines for next-generation sequencing applications.
    • Provide informatics support in development of clinical diagnostic tests
    • Assist in mining/annotation of clinical data. In addition a strong understanding of the principles of genetics is a preferred plus. Good to moderate programming skills is required for this position.
    • Manage current clinical pipelines including updates and collaborate with IT staff to coordinate software releases.
    • Perform post sequence run, data quality assessment, troubleshooting.
    • Assist in the analysis, acquisition, and loading of new data sources.
    • Help plan small projects. Execute established project plans and suggest alternatives when appropriate. Proactively use available resources to resolve problems.
    • Work collaboratively with the group.

    REQUIREMENTS

    • M.Sc. in bioinformatics, computer science or related field preferred
    • Basic knowledge of algorithms, data structures, and scientific programming.
    • Experience in a Unix/Linux environment, including proficiency in shell scripting, and scripting in a language such as Perl or Python (preferably Perl).
    • Some experience with R statistical package or MatLab.
    • Familiarity with common NGS tools (BWA/GATK/Picard Tools, etc).
    • Familiarity using common bioinformatics databases (UCSC, NCBI, etc).
    • Ability to manage multiple projects in a dynamic environment with changing priorities.
    • Strong interest in molecular biology and genetics, and a willingness to learn concepts and terminology from these fields as needed.

    PREFERENCES

    • Thesis-level work showing scientific analytical thinking is a major plus.
    • 1-2 years of experience in software development is a plus.
    • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work as part of a diverse team, while contributing to a high-quality and respectful work environment.
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively to colleagues and staff across multi-disciplinary areas.
    • Ability to partner with others to establish realistic goals and deliver work on schedule.
