Opportunity: Bioinformatics Programmer positions @ Bioinformatics Research Laboratory at Baylor College of Medicine -- Houston, TX (US)

BACKGROUND:
The Bioinformatics Research Laboratory (BRL) (http://www.brl.bcm.tmc.edu/) participates in several national and international genomic and epigenomic projects and numerous collaborations within the Texas Medical Center in Houston. One key consortium project, carried out in collaboration with our home department of Molecular and Human Genetics at Baylor College of Medicine is the development of an annotated database of human genomic variation. The BRL is also serving as the Data Coordination Center for the recently announced NIH Extracellular RNA Communication Program LINK: http://commonfund.nih.gov/exrna/. Programmers will contribute components to an existing online data storage and analysis platform, improve and extend existing software infrastructure, and add significant new capabilities to these and other highly visible projects.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Programmers will contribute components to an existing online data storage and analysis platform, improve and extend existing software infrastructure, and add significant new capabilities to these and other highly visible projects. The successful candidate will be able to design, code, test, and debug generic software solutions with an emphasis on reusability, and which extend an existing system. Successful applicants will also meet with users to discuss requirements, create necessary test data, test software, and prepare documentation. A goal for the software created by programmers will be their application to important biological questions for publication in high impact journals.

REQUIREMENTS:
Candidates at various levels of formal training, including BS, MS, and PhD levels will be considered. Requirements include: programming experience in a UNIX/Linux command-line environment; using programming languages such as Perl, Python, Ruby, Java, C++; ability to contribute to and use object-oriented code libraries; functional familiarity with web technologies (such as JavaScript, Ajax, CSS, ExtJS/jQuery/YUI, HTML, JSP, REST APIs). Candidates familiar with semantic web programming, RDF, SPARQL, and/or triplestores, and other NoSQL databases will have an advantage, as will candidates familiar with the use of batch execution systems such as PBS, LSF, or GridEngine. Experience with SQL and relational databases is a plus. Candidates who can contribute to system administration of in-house IT infrastructure as a minor duty will also be viewed favorably.

The candidates should have experience with good software engineering practices, designing and developing software solutions to specifications and to according to local standards and practices, and with the use of version control systems. In addition, candidates must have excellent English-language communication and interpersonal skills, and be capable of working within a team of biologists and programmers.

PREFERENCES:
Candidates familiar with semantic web programming, RDF, SPARQL, and/or triplestores, and other NoSQL databases will have an advantage, as will candidates familiar with the use of batch execution systems such as PBS, LSF, or GridEngine. Experience with SQL and relational databases is a plus. Candidates who can contribute to system administration of in-house IT infrastructure as a minor duty will also be viewed favorably.
