Opportunity: Computational Biologist @ Centre for Bio-Modelling at European Molecular Biology Laboratory -- Heidelberg, Germany
Submitted by EMBL Recruitment; posted on Tuesday, October 01, 2013

    BACKGROUND

The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) is one of the highest ranked scientific research organisations in the world. The Headquarters Laboratory is located in Heidelberg (Germany) and the outstations are in Grenoble (France), Hamburg (Germany), Hinxton (UK) and Monterotondo (Italy).

    RESPONSIBILITIES

Research projects at EMBL span a wide range of fundamental biological processes in which mathematical modelling is essential to generate mechanistic insights. The new Centre for Bio-Modelling will foster the use of theory and modelling at EMBL. Its objective is to enable researchers to generate predictions based on physical/chemical first principles, by using the available biological knowledge.

The successful candidate will coordinate and drive the activities of the centre, and her/his main responsibilities will include:
    • Organising internal and external training (short courses on modelling and simulation techniques)
    • Organising various networking events (organizing annual retreat, seminars, journal clubs, etc.)
    • Being available to advise researchers with modelling matters
    • Maintenance and support of software and simulation tools
    • Active participation in research projects with modelling component
The successful candidate will work under the supervision of Nedelec, Patil and Saez-Rodriguez, and in close collaboration with the other computational centres.

    REQUIREMENTS

The ideal candidate will have a PhD or equivalent experience or qualifications with a focus on modelling in the biosciences. A good understanding of basic concepts in molecular and cellular biology and the desire to apply theoretical methods to practical problems are essential. Ability to teach and to interact with people of diverse backgrounds and in several international locations is required. Experience with a range of theoretical methods that are applicable to biological problems are desired. Programming skills in more than one language (MATLAB, C++, python, Perl etc.) and familiarity with existing bio-simulation platforms will be an advantage.
