Opportunity: Assistant Professor of Biology -- Bioinformatics @ Nevada State College -- Henderson, NV (US)
Submitted by Cheri Canfield; posted on Thursday, October 24, 2013

Celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2012, Nevada State College is a public, four-year institution in the Nevada System of Higher Education committed to serving historically underserved students. Enrollment at the college has climbed from 176 students in 2002 to nearly 3,500 students in 2013, and Biology is one of the fastest growing majors on campus. An expansion of our current program to include training in Bioinformatics will help prepare our students to embrace the coming technological and informatics revolution in science and medicine.

The Physical and Life Sciences Department at Nevada State College invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Biology with a specialty in Bioinformatics. The new hire is expected to start in August of 2014.

We are seeking excellent teacher-scholars to work alongside our dedicated faculty in an interdisciplinary environment. Our faculty members enjoy the rare opportunity to shape the college as it continues to grow into a cornerstone of higher education in Southern Nevada. Faculty in the Liberal Arts and Sciences work in a new, state-of-the-art facility that features "smart" classrooms and cutting edge biotechnology labs on our developing 500-acre campus. Our academic faculty members represent rigorous academic preparation from outstanding doctoral programs combined with dedication to new and exemplary methods of instruction and assessment. Nevada State College faculty are united and inspired by the opportunity to build curricula, programs, and the college itself.

Our new exceptional teacher will be expected to teach lower and upper division courses within the department and help develop new courses in the area of the candidate's expertise. Courses could include current offerings such as Principles of Modem Biology for science majors, Genetics, and Statistics for science majors, as well as new courses in Bioinformatics and Introduction to Computer Science. We hope to find a colleague with interest and potential to shape interdisciplinary opportunities (with research and curriculum) in informatics and data science among faculty and students. Scholarly activities (with the discipline or in Scholarship of Teaching and Learning) are also expected and involvement of undergraduates in projects is encouraged. Available equipment of interest includes a mass spectrometer, PCR thermocyclers, flow cyclometer (including an imaging flow cytometer), HPLC and GC, capillary electrophoresis, and a BSL-2 certified lab.

    • Ph.D. in Biology, Bioinformatics, or related field. Highly competitive candidates who are A.B.D. also may be considered (degree requirements must be completed prior to the start date of August 15, 2014).
    • Evidence of teaching excellence at the college/university level.
    • Evidence of strong commitment to teaching, mentoring, and working with undergraduate students.
    • Evidence of scholarly productivity and potential.
    • Eligible to work in the United States (note: NSC currently does not sponsor visas for international employees).

    • A commitment to help grow the Biology degree program and our growing institution.
    • Demonstrated commitment to active and experiential learning.
    • Experience with innovative teaching approaches and/or technologies.
    • Demonstrated commitment to working with a diverse student population.
    • Interest in helping build interdisciplinary informatics curriculum.
