Opportunity: Senior Statistician (#1193) @ Social & Scientific Systems -- Silver Spring, MD (US)
Submitted by Molly Assion; posted on Thursday, October 31, 2013
BACKGROUND:
Social & Scientific Systems, Inc. (SSS) is seeking a Senior Statistician to lead an experienced team of statisticians, bioinformaticians, biomathematicians, epidemiologists and statistical programmers. Our work is broadly motivated by questions about how environmental exposures adversely affect human health and has a long-term goal of reducing the burden of human disease and disability. Our approach is to collaborate closely with our clients to achieve a clear understanding of their scientific questions and to translate those questions into efficient study designs, informative data analyses and peer-reviewed publications. We accomplish this by fostering a high level of technical achievement for each team member in a mutually respectful professional environment. This position includes a broad range of quantitative approaches to modeling systematic effects and characterizing sources of stochastic variation in environmental, biological and clinical data. The analytical challenges range from molecular analyses of designed experiments with model organisms to observational studies of clinical characteristics in human populations. We develop and fit mathematical models to facilitate data interpretation and to facilitate communication with our collaborators and contribute to peer-reviewed literature. Our analytical experience includes high and low dimensional data with measurements ranging from the expression level of genes to the population prevalence of clinical attributes.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
* Develop scientifically sound study designs and data analysis plans.
* Consult with scientists on statistical methods and data analysis techniques.
* Communicate with and advise clients at various levels of statistical sophistication.
* Provide expertise in advanced statistical techniques.
* Write statistical analysis plans and produce power calculations.
* Conduct statistically valid and scientifically appropriate data analyses.
* Make scientific and business presentations to clients and administrative leadership.
* Analyze, interpret and display data using statistical and graphical tools.
* Contribute to the design and statistical analysis of epidemiologic studies.
* Write regular and ad hoc reports for clients.
* Develop productive working relationships with team members, administrative leadership and external clients.

REQUIREMENTS:
* Ph.D. degree in Statistics or Biostatistics and at least 5 years of relevant experience.
* Experience with statistical analysis of biological and environmental health data.
* Management experience.
* Strong verbal and written communication skills.
* Scientific and technical writing skills as evidenced by peer reviewed publications.
* Strong critical thinking and problem solving skills.
* The ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously and enjoy working in a multidisciplinary environment with quantitative and life scientists.

LOCALE:
This position is based in our Durham, NC office.
