Submitted by Human Resources; posted on Thursday, November 07, 2013
BACKGROUND:
Located in Boston, Dana Farber Cancer Institute brings together world-renowned clinicians, innovative researchers, and dedicated professionals as allies in the common mission of conquering cancer, HIV/AIDS and related diseases. Combining extremely talented people with the best technologies in a genuinely positive environment, we provide compassionate and comprehensive care to patients of all ages; we conduct research that advances treatment; we educate tomorrow's physician/researchers; we reach out to underserved members of our community; and we work with amazing partners, including other Harvard Medical School-affiliated hospitals.

The mission of the Center for Cancer Genome Discovery (CCGD) at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute is to facilitate genome discoveries in a human cancer by basic and translational research. The CCGD has established technology platforms to assist researchers in both genome-wide and gene-focused efforts such as next-generation sequencing, genotyping, somatic mutation detection and copy number analysis. We strive to be at the cutting-edge of cancer characterization, utilizing novel technologies and adapting existing technologies for the advancement of cancer research. Technologies are selected and developed with a view to discovery-oriented ventures, as well as translational medicine and clinical relevance.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

More specifically, he/she will lead the development of our next generation sequencing analysis efforts to identify all manner of variants from next generation sequencing data. He/she will be leading the effort for evaluating existing or developing new tools for mutation detection, copy number analysis, translocations and RNAseq. The Computational Biologist will provide assistance to faculty and research staff in identifying and interpreting genomic variants in individual samples or in larger patient cohorts.

Additional duties may include, but are not limited to:
* Identify opportunities and develop innovative solutions for the analysis and management of genomic data, including Genome and Whole exome sequencing data.
* Assist in designing experiments for the validation of the analysis process.
* Provide direct technical and scientific support for CCGD investigators and staff

REQUIREMENTS:
* MS or PhD in bioinformatics, computer science and/or the life sciences and 5+ years relevant experience. Previous experience in molecular biology, cancer genomics, or a related field is strongly preferred.
* Experience in analyzing next generation sequencing data is required
* Demonstrated experience in Java and Perl (object-oriented) in a UNIX/Linux environment. Must have expert-level knowledge in at least one.
* Experience performing statistical analysis on large data sets, including proficiency in R is a plus.
