BACKGROUND
Under the general direction and supervision of the principal investigator (PI) and the direct oversight beamline scientists, the Research Assistant will assist with the SIBYLS and HHMI wet-laboratory space that includes ensuring all equipment is operational and well maintained, provide user support for mail-in services and aid beamline scientists in their respective research.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Laboratory and General Assistance:
- Receive, catalog, and prepare samples from collaborators and users for structural characterization.
- Assist in the data entry on UNIX, OSX and Windows based computers.
- Assist in the day-to-day preparation of buffered solutions and media for beamline personnel.
- Perform assigned general laboratory duties as requested by the scientists and PI.
- Place purchase orders with vendors.
- Responsible for daily maintenance of work area.
- Assist with maintaining equipment including Mill-Q purification system, PCR, AKTA Explorer and Ettan, BioRad HPLC and refrigerators and freezers.
- Maintain laboratory compliance with safety regulations.
- Maintain inventories of essential laboratory consumables.
Research Support:
- Assist in performing expression of proteins in bacteria, including maintenance, growth and harvest of bacterial cultures for special projects.
- Practical experience in optimizing cell-free protein synthesis.
- Assist in performing separation and preliminary analysis of proteins using chromatographic techniques.
- Use standard molecular biological techniques to subclone genes for recombinant expression.
- Assist with duties using biochemical laboratory equipment, including BioRad HPLC system, BioRad C1000 quantitative PCR cycler, centrifuges, UV-VIS spectrophotometers, pH meters, balances, etc.
- Maintain an accurate and detailed laboratory notebook of all work performed. Ensure that others can duplicate results.
REQUIREMENTS
- Experience and course work within the last 4 years in cell and molecular biology.
- Demonstrated experience with common biochemical laboratory equipment, including BioRad HPLC system, prep- and ultra-centrifuges, UV-VIS spectrophotometers, pH meters, etc.
- Demonstrated experience in liquid chromatographic techniques.
- Knowledge of basic molecular biology techniques.
- Demonstrated ability to organize, analyze and document research activities and maintain laboratory experimental records.
- Familiarity with basic computer spreadsheet software to perform data analysis.
- Experience using personal computers using programs such as MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.
- Experience with various cell free protein synthesis systems.
- Experience with long-transcript RNA transcription and purification.
- Good interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
- Ability to work as a team member to accomplish research goals.
- Willingness to work flexible hours.
- Ability to multi-task efficiently.
- Ability to perform routine responsibilities independently, work dependably and flexibly.
PREFERENCES
- Bachelor's degree in biochemistry, molecular biology, chemistry, or related field.
TERMS
