Opportunity: Group Leader of Technology Innovation, Center for Molecular Oncology @ Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center -- New York, NY (US)
Submitted by Keshia Pierre; posted on Friday, December 13, 2013

    BACKGROUND

Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC) is the world's oldest and largest private institution devoted to the prevention, treatment, and cure of cancer. It is located in New York City, in Manhattan's Upper East Side, adjacent to the Cornell University Weill Medical College and Rockefeller University.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

As part of a strategic plan to expand efforts in the application of genomic analysis to the diagnosis and treatment of cancer patients, MSKCC invites applications for leading a new Technology Innovation Laboratory. This group will reside in the MSKCC Center for Molecular Oncology (CMO), a new program developed to lead large-scale translational and clinical research and promote "precision" medicine. We are looking for a dynamic scientist to assume day-to-day responsibility for a laboratory that will interface with existing technology development efforts in Pathology, Genomics, and Bioinformatics. The incumbent will supervise a group of experimental and computational scientists to develop and validate genetic, epigenetic, proteomic, and metabolomic-based assays for the molecular analysis of patient tissue, and to evaluate emerging technologies for potential clinical utility. Assays will meet the quality standards mandated by CLIA, which regulates testing in humans. The director will also work with clinical and translational oncology researchers in the design and execution of projects involving molecular analysis of samples from patients enrolled on clinical trials. Efforts will be coordinated closely with the leadership of the CMO and the Departments of Pathology, Laboratory Medicine, and Computational Biology.

    REQUIREMENTS

The successful candidate must have an M.D. or Ph.D. and hands-on experience with genome scale analysis of clinical material including nucleic acid isolation, instrumentation and automation, massively parallel DNA and RNA sequencing, proteomic techniques, experimental design, and bioinformatics scale data analysis. Prior experience in molecular oncology research using human tissue samples is highly recommended. At least three to five years of postgraduate training in academic or corporate research, attention to detail and accuracy, strong organizational and troubleshooting abilities, and outstanding communication skills are also required. Previous management and administrative experience are preferred.
