Opportunity: Genomic Data and Scientific Content Curator @ Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center -- New York, NY (US)
Submitted by Gina Schaefer; posted on Thursday, March 20, 2014

    BACKGROUND

Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center is a world renowned organization dedicated to the progressive control and cure of cancer through programs of patient care, research, and education.

The mission of the Center for Molecular Oncology (CMO) is to promote precision oncology through genomic analysis to guide the diagnosis and treatment of cancer patients. The CMO brings together clinicians and scientists throughout MSKCC to conduct large-scale translational research involving molecular characterization of patient tumor specimens in order to identify correlations between genomic features and clinical outcomes.

We are looking for a Genomic Data and Scientific Content Curator to support the cBioPortal for Cancer Genomics at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (cbioportal.org). The cBioPortal is a highly successful tool that supports the CMO as well as thousands of cancer researchers and clinicians around the globe. To take the Portal to the next level and to transition it towards use in the clinic, we are looking to improve and expand its data content.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

The Curator will be responsible for the collection, maintenance, and quality control of genomic alteration data and related clinical annotation for the cBioPortal, specifically:
    • Identify and collect relevant data sets from the scientific literature and public databases
    • Perform data quality control and conversion for import into cBioPortal
    • Assist collaborators with data formatting
    • Help with curating the known effects of recurrent oncogenic mutations (for incorporation into our clinical reports)
    • Identify relevant information in clinical databases at MSKCC and help link this to the genomic data in a local version of cBioPortal
    • Assist cBioPortal users with questions about the data and perform training sessions
    • Update website content and help prepare educational documents

    REQUIREMENTS

    • PhD in molecular biology, genetics, genomics, bioinformatics (or equivalent) (or a Masters Degree with two years of work experience)
    • Knowledge of cancer genomics and genomic data, including next-generation sequencing and microarray data
    • Bioinformatics skills (Unix, scripting)
    • Strong communication skills (written and oral)
    • Attention to detail

    POLICY

MSKCC is an equal opportunity and affirmative action employer committed to diversity and inclusion in all aspects of recruiting and employment.
