    Opportunity: Bioinformatician @ VGTI Florida -- Port St Lucie, FL (US)

    BACKGROUND

    This position will play a key role in process improvement and technology evaluation projects in the Bioinformatics team. The Bioinformatician will understand the science in order to establish a high quality, science-driven culture that delivers quality database products and contributes to the intellectual steering of biological activities. The Bioinformatician will be responsible for the design of federated database solutions in Molecular Biology. Responsibilities will include but not be limited to design of database schema, implementation and maintenance of such designs, design of computational tools to easily upload data, design of computational tools to analyze and report data, incorporation of life sciences ontology or vocabularies in data semantics, and design of computational tools for data exchange that incorporates data ontology.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Apply advanced bioinformatics, statistical and computation techniques
    • Communicate effectively with national and international colleagues in a highly collaborative manner
    • Initiate and conduct research experiments independently
    • Assist in the development of a user-friendly integrated biology database
    • Lead microarray and next generation sequencing-based analysis of animal models of vaccination while integrating data from human subjects
    • Work closely with researchers in leading laboratories and consortium on academically demanding projects

    EXPERIENCE

    • Demonstrated expertise and/or experience in areas relevant to designing databases for Integrative Biology research and development. This may include:
      • Design, construct and manage data generated from Expression technologies (Microarray, High Throughput QPCR, Next Generation Sequence (NGS) counts)
      • Design, construct and manage data generated from NGS technologies
      • Design architecture to integrate and manage biology databases
      • Design federated approaches to search across and access multiple databases
    • Demonstrated experience and/or expertise in the usage of SQL database. Preference will be given to candidates with knowledge and experience in both SQL and NoSQL database management systems.
    • Demonstrated expertise and/or experience in areas relevant to designing computational tools that may include:
    • Developing pipelines to automatically collect data from various sources and formats
    • Build User interfaces to federated databases
    • Integrate visualization tools to analyze and report data
    • Demonstrated ability to coordinate and prioritize work, with effective problem solving skills. Must be able to undertake independent data analysis and interpretation
    • Demonstrate strong communication skills to facilitate matrix and line team working
      • A track record of clear, concise and effective communication
      • Strong inter-personal skill
      • Can prepare and present oral presentations and posters for internal/external audiences
    • Ability to effectively leverage the literature and/or internal or external experts, interpret data, recommend or execute creative options and communicate findings clearly and concisely to Biology projects or teams

    REQUIREMENTS

    • Two to five years of experience in microarray, epigenetic and RNA-sequencing bioinformatics analysis
    • Experience with developing and creating new bioinformatics analysis techniques
    • Demonstrated project management record keeping and multi-tasking abilities
    • Experience in immune pathway and gene expression analysis
    • Excellent computer, scientific, and organizational skills
    • Oral and written communication skills
    • Attention to detail and data quality control abilities
    • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
    • Applicant must be self-motivated and adaptive to diverse research environments
    • A demonstrated peer-reviewed publication record is a plus
