    Opportunity: Functional Genomics Postdoc (#80006) @ DOE Joint Genome Institute -- Walnut Creek, CA (US)

    The Department of Energy (DOE) Joint Genome Institute (JGI) in Walnut Creek, CA (a division of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory) has an immediate functional genomics postdoctoral fellow opportunity to work as part of the Genome Technology group and perform research into the discovery and transfer of novel pathways for phosphate solubilization. This project has a long-term goal of developing plant associated bacterial strains that alleviate the need for added phosphate fertilizers.

    Research will include: developing assays to screen bacterial transposon mutant populations for novel genes involved in phosphate solubilization; synthesizing novel phosphate solubilization genes and engineering them into recipient bacterial strains; developing assays to test engineered strains for phosphate solubilization capabilities in culture and in soil and plant-root associated systems. The postdoctoral fellow will have an opportunity to collaborate with other researchers at the JGI and LBNL to utilize existing expertise and capabilities in these areas.


    • Develop functional genomics assays for discovery of novel phosphate solubilization pathways.
    • Synthesize novel phosphate solubilizing genes and engineer them into recipient strains.
    • Develop assays for phosphate solubilizing capabilities of engineered bacterial strains.
    • Employ internal and external software and web-based analysis tools for processing and analyzing collected data.
    • Develop, adapt and improve software for analysis tasks as needed.
    • Store and organize results for presentation and viewing by collaborators and the wider scientific community.
    • Interact with collaborators to ensure effective communication and completion of analysis projects.
    • Write results up for publication.
    • May attend and present data at group meetings.


    • Recent Ph.D. in Life Sciences (Functional Genomics, Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Synthetic Biology or related field)
    • Proficiency in molecular biology, bioinformatics, and genomics
    • Experience developing basic molecular biology and microbiology techniques
    • Experience in computer programming (e.g., Perl or Python) and working in UNIX environment
    • Experience in computational analysis of biological sequence data especially next-generation sequence data
    • Ability to apply technology skills in troubleshooting problems
    • Effective interpersonal skills for working in a diverse team environment including all levels of staff
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills to present findings at group meetings and conferences and publish results
    • Organizational and detailed record keeping skills to record experiment results and analyze data
    • Ability to effectively communicate and understand scientific/technical terminology in collaboration with a variety of technical and scientific personnel including lab scientists, research support staff and software engineers
    • Preferred - Experience working with phosphate solubilizing bacteria
    • Preferred - Experience working with plant root associated bacteria


    This is a one-year postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal contingent upon continued funding and work performance, and ongoing need. Work will be performed at the Joint Genome Institute in Walnut Creek, CA. A background check is required.
