Opportunity: Bioinformatics Application Training and Support Specialist (#48139) @ SRA International -- Atlanta, GA (US)

BACKGROUND
SRA is seeking a Bioinformatics Scientist to provide User Support and Training for Bioinformatics Applications at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). In this role, you will be the front line for providing tier 2 & 3 user support, as well as training for bioinformatics applications within the CDC scientific computing environment. As CDC modernizes its approaches to public health practices, there is a growing need to both educate and assist agency staff with diverse backgrounds in the use of a wide range of bioinformatics tools and systems. The Bioinformatics Application Training and Support Specialist will be Key in assisting with those needs. In this role, you will work within a team of approximately 10 administrators and high-performance computing experts to identify training and support needs for the user community based on user input, volume of application support held desk requests, and management input. As needs are identified, you will work with other team members to develop content for courses and deliver training and support materials. The range of activities that may be covered spans the full application life cycle from installation and setup, to use of specific tools and may include custom off the shelf, opens source, and custom applications.
To be successful in this role, you must efficiently manage multiple assignments with a sense of urgency, structure, and attention to detail to ensure business continuity. You should possess troubleshooting, problem solving and analytical skills while also having experience with a wide range of bioinformatics applications. In addition, you will be responsible for providing documentation, training materials, user guides, and other application specific materials to the contract. You must possess strong communications skills for both written/oral interactions and instructor-led training.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Key Responsibilities include:
- Liaise between the SciComp project team and assigned customers regarding information systems operations, schedules, problems, timelines, procedures, and requirements.
- Receive requests from customers for service or problem resolution; prioritize requests and work towards resolution; track the progress of service and problem resolution; contact customers to keep them informed of the status of their requests.
- Develop written communication and documentation for users and for internal use
- Provide guidance & assistance to users in response to written and verbal questions regarding the proper use and implementation of appropriate procedures and operations necessary to meet user needs
- Interact one-on-one with users to assist, troubleshoot, and debug scientific applications.
- Assist in research and analysis of problems and coordinate with other SciComp team members as-needed for additional expertise
- Assist in the development and monthly delivery of training course modules, user guides, screen-casts, seminars, and other training materials to train end-users in the use of software applications. Current courses include Introduction to Linux, Intro to High Performance Computing (HPC), and Advanced HPC). Some of the new courses to be developed include Intro to Scientific Computing and Linux for Bioinformaticians)
- Create, update and maintain user manuals, training, newsletters, and other client-facing and internally-facing materials using tools such as PowerPoint, Snaggit, and Camtasia
- Maintain and/or prepare records, reports and logs and counts of monthly activities associated with applications and related application activities.
- Actively participate in the testing and implementation of new systems
- Interact with SciComp team regarding program changes and problems
- Document problems with applications for appropriate action
- Assist with the development and coding solutions (e.g. scripts) in support of scientific applications
- Establish and maintain cooperative and supportive relationships with customers
REQUIREMENTS
- Requires a Masters and 3+ years or Bachelors and 5+ years; PhD candidates will also be considered (education to ideally include coursework in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Informatics, High Performance Computing or related fields)
- Experience with the Linux operating system, specifically Ubuntu, CentOS, and RedHat (such as fundamentals of navigating and working with file systems, command line tasks, etc. Experience with scripting languages such as bash, perl or python is a plus)
- Experience with bioinformatics open source applications (such as Blast and Beast).
PREFERENCES
- Experience working as a teaching assistant or other group training / presentation experience is preferred
- Excellent command of the English language to include grammar, written and verbal communication skills
- Knowledge of scientific instrumentation is preferred (such as Illumina products (MiSeq, NextSeq, HiSeq) and Pacific Biosciences PacBio, and IonTorrent)
- Ability to read and debug application scripts written in perl, python, or bourne-shell
- Scripting / Programming experience
- Experience building user documentation and courseware
- Experience with the following commercial off the shelf applications: CLC Genomics Suite, Geneious, Matlab
- Experience delivering training courses or seminars
