Opportunity: Senior Bioinformatician/Postdoctoral Fellow (#81919) @ Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute -- Hinxton/Cambridge, UK

RESPONSIBILITIES
An exciting opportunity has become available for a Senior Bioinformatician/Postdoctoral Fellow to join the Zeggini team at the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute. The role will involve contributing to a range of analyses identifying and interpreting genetic variation associated with complex traits from genome-wide genotyping and sequencing studies. As well as providing bioinformatics support for on-going projects in the team, which include whole genome sequence data in diverse population cohorts with rich phenotype information and functional genomics data, the successful applicant will have the opportunity to develop novel computational and statistical approaches to interpret the results of variation studies.
REQUIREMENTS
The successful candidate will have an undergraduate or postgraduate degree in either biological sciences, statistics, computer science or a related area. Previous experience of the computational analysis of large-scale biological data sets is essential. The candidate must have substantial programming experience, ideally in languages currently used in the team (including Perl, Python, R and C) and be comfortable working in a Unix environment. The candidate must be able to work as a team member and communicate well with external collaborators. S/he will have excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to prioritise tasks in order to work independently. Essential Skills:
- Experience in quantitative science or life sciences as evidenced for example by a undergraduate or postgraduate degree in a relevant subject (e.g. Computing, Statistics, Genetics)
- Excellent programming skills, both scripting and developing larger programs
- Attention to detail and ability to work to tight timelines
- Demonstrable project management and organisational skills
- Previous experience in working with large-scale datasets
- Experience in using and integrating information from bioinformatics resources
- Ability to write and speak English fluently
- Ability to communicate effectively with collaborators both internally and externally from a range of backgrounds
PREFERENCES
Ideal Skills:
- Experience working in a high performance computing environment
- Experience with statistical methods
- Track record in preparing publications and other written materials
LOCALE
The Sanger Institute is located near Cambridge, UK on the stunning Wellcome Trust Genome Campus. This growing and dynamic site is the British hub of genomic science. It hosts the European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI), the Centre for Therapeutic Target Validation, a Biodata Innovation Centre and will soon host Genomics England Limited's 100,000 Genomes Sequencing Centre. It is an excellent environment in which to work and collaborate with researchers on campus and around the world and benefit from cross-fertilisation of ideas.
To help researchers to develop their skills and networks, the Institute hosts a range of scientific seminars with internal and invited speakers, scientific group meetings and skills development workshops. In addition the Campus is home to the Wellcome Trust Advanced Course and Scientific Conferences programme and the Wellcome Trust Conference Centre.
TERMS
This position is available as a fixed term until the end of September 2016.
COMPENSATION
GBP 31,567 to GBP 38,088 per annum plus excellent benefits.
