    Opportunity: Sr. Programmer Analyst/Bioinformatcis @ Columbia University -- New York, NY (US)

    DESCRIPTION

    The Center for Infection and Immunity (CII) – one of the world's most advanced academic centers for research in infectious disease surveillance, diagnosis and discovery is seeking an experienced individual for a Sr. Programmer Analyst position on its Bioinformatics team. The successful applicant will provide bioinformatics support for ongoing research in pathogen detection and discovery on projects related to infectious disease surveillance and discovery in humans and wildlife.

    The candidate is expected to demonstrate the following skills:
    • At least 3-4 years of experience in writing pipelines and analysis of next generation sequencing data. The candidate should possess basic knowledge of data QC, mapping, de-novo assembly, BLAST and understanding of algorithms behind them.
    • Excellent problem solving skills.
    • Ability to work independently on a variety of new projects, show initiative and leadership to drive projects toward completion in a timely manner.
    • Knowledge of 16s rRNA data using Qiime for microbiome analysis is a plus.
    • Coursework in genetics and molecular biology as well as practical knowledge of major bioinformatics tools and resources: NCBI, UCSC etc.
    • The position requires the ability to work in Unix environments consisting of high performance clusters. Understanding of multi-threading tools (SGE, MPI), resource management and allocation would be a big plus.
    • At least 3-4 years of academic or industrial experience working with scripting languages, such as C Shell, Perl, or Python or R. Desired qualifications include: applied mathematics/statistics/biostatistics background and experience in object-oriented programming.
    • The candidate will perform other duties as assigned.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    Duties and Responsibilities:
    Provide bioinformatics support for ongoing research in virus detection and discovery in a large and dynamic laboratory – 85%
    Contribute to publications and research grants – 10%
    Perform other related duties as assigned – 5%

    REQUIREMENTS

    Minimum Qualifications:
    • Requires a Bachelor's Degree in Bioinformatics or Computer Science and at least four years of related experience.
    • The candidate selected for this position is required to undergo a full background check prior to a final offer of employment being made.

    PREFERENCES

    Preferred Qualifications:
    • Master's Degree with 1-2 years of experience or equivalent.
