Education: UNC Charlotte Bioinformatics Summer Institute

The University of North Carolina at Charlotte, Department of Bioinformatics and Genomics, is pleased to announce that we will offer our second annual Summer Institute, aimed at students and professionals who are seeking an accelerated training program in genomic bioinformatics.

The Bioinformatics Summer Institute is a limited enrollment, full-time 10-week program broken into 4 equal sessions. It provides hands-on experiences that begin with processing a DNA sample, then creating a library and sequencing it on the Ion Torrent PGM Next Generation Sequencing platform. In subsequent courses, students will work with the data they generate to learn state of the art bioinformatics and statistical methods, and to use workflow systems to combine methods into analysis pipelines.

The program assumes an undergraduate degree in a life science discipline but does not require prior programming experience. The Graduate Certificate is open for early entry so rising seniors may also apply. Successful graduates of the program will be awarded the Graduate Certificate in Bioinformatics Applications.

    The program schedule is:

May 18-June 3 Genomic Biotechnology Laboratory (BINF 6350)
    June 8-June 23 Genomics (BINF 6203)
June 29-July 15 Bioinformatics Pipeline Programming (BINF 6215)
July 20-August 4 Statistics for Bioinformatics (BINF 6200)

Each 12-day class involves at least 3 hours per day of lecture and workshop-style instruction along with a supervised hands-on laboratory session. Applications to the program can be made through mygradschool.uncc.edu. Applications for the certificate will be considered as they are received until the program is filled. The last date to apply for the certificate program full is March 1, 2015.

Several spaces in BINF 6203, BINF 6215, and BINF 6200 will be available for a la carte enrollment at any time. Spaces in BINF 6350 may be released for a la carte enrollment after the certificate application deadline.

More information about the program costs and curriculum can be found at (https://summerschool.uncc.edu/bioinformatics).
