Opportunity: Principal/Senior Bioinformatician @ Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute -- Hinxton/Cambridge, UK
Submitted by Sam Bowker; posted on Tuesday, December 23, 2014

    BACKGROUND

Applications are invited for a bioinformatician to join the Genetic Epidemiology Group at Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute based in Hinxton; Cambridge. The group has a strong focus on medical genetic research in sub-Saharan Africa, including leading a large-scale whole genome sequencing effort on 4000 individuals to characterise genetic diversity across Africa, studying population migration and admixture, with sequencing of ancient DNA across the region, and whole genome association studies of cardiometabolic and infectious disease traits in African populations. We have recently published on the African Genome Variation Project (Gurdasani D. et al, Nature, 2014), a large panel of genotyping and sequence data available as a resource to inform medical genetics across Africa.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

The successful candidate will work collaboratively to develop data analysis strategies to curate large-scale next generation sequencing data and address key questions about population genetics in relation to health and disease Africa, including the opportunity to work with ancient DNA from the region. The post-holder will also interact with WTSI systems teams, international research groups, and support the work of other research group members, including capacity building projects in Africa. This is an exceptional opportunity for candidates to enhance their knowledge and skills while working at the frontline of global genomics research in a group recognised for their research excellence.

    REQUIREMENTS

    Essential Skills:
    • Applicants should ideally have a first degree in a highly numerate subject (e.g. natural sciences, maths, statistics or computer science) or have a degree in another subject coupled with extensive experience working with quantitative data
    • Proven understanding and experience in the fields of genomics, data processing, high-throughput data analysis, and genomic databases. Understanding of genome structure a must
    • Experience providing advice, training and support to other researchers in the areas of bioinformatics and data analysis
    • Firm grasp of univariate statistical analysis fundamentals necessary. Experience with multivariate statistics or statistical modelling a plus
    • Candidates should have knowledge of leading NGS processing techniques for the identification of SNPs and structural variants
    • Strong computational skills, particularly in data parsing, cleansing, data modeling, analysis, and database design and implementation
    • Knowledge and experience working in a unix/linux environment
    • Demonstrated programming skills in shell scripting (e.g. bash, tcsh), interpreted/scripting languages (e.g. Perl, Python, R)
    • Ability to review, synthesise, and present scientific data and methods
    • Good written and verbal communication skills
    • The ability to present methodologies and results succinctly
    • The ability to anticipate needs and problems while creating solutions
    • The ability to work within a team

    PREFERENCES

    Ideal Skills:
    • A PhD in computer science, computational biology, biostatistics, bioinformatics, or similar fields is desired although not strictly necessary
    • Direct experience processing NGS data is a plus
    • Candidates would ideally be familiar with the capabilities and limitations of NGS platforms and informatics pipelines, so that data can be appropriately integrated into analyses
    • Experience with cluster computing is a plus
    • Programming skills in compiled language(s) (e.g. Java, C, C++)

    LOCALE

The Genome Campus is a 100-acre estate south of Cambridge in the grounds of Hinxton Hall. Nestled in the quiet countryside of these landscaped gardens, are two world-class research facilities: the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute and the European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI). The site has become the British hub of biomedical science. The Campus is also home to the Wellcome Trust Advanced Course and Scientific Conferences programme and the Wellcome Trust Conference Centre.

In addition to its peaceful location the campus offers excellent facilities including a start of the art data centre, gym, two cafes, a nursery, dining facilities, a cycle to work scheme, car sharing and free campus buses from various locations around Cambridge.

Learning, development and networking are other important aspects of life on campus. There are a range of scientific seminars with our own and invited speakers, scientific group meetings and skills development workshops.

    TERMS

    • Fixed-term for 3 years in the first instance
    • The successful applicant may be required to travel to Africa.
    • Position will be preferentially offered at either the Senior or Principal Bioinformatician level; however applications from more junior candidates showing strong interest and potential for development will also be considered.

    COMPENSATION

    • Our Benefits include: Defined Benefit Pension Scheme, Group Income Protection, Healthcare scheme, Childcare Vouchers, Nursery and Annual Leave 25 days plus Bank Holidays.
    • Salary range for Senior Bioinformation: GBP 30574 to GBP 38564 (dependent on level of experience)
    • Salary range for Principal Bioinformatician: GBP 37845 to GBP 48147 (dependent on level of experience)
