Opportunity: Postdoctoral Fellow -- Bioinformatics @ Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute -- Hinxton/Cambridge, UK
Submitted by Sam Bowker; posted on Monday, March 02, 2015
DESCRIPTION
We are seeking an outstanding Postdoctoral Bioinformatician to contribute to the building of a medically important set of mouse genome sequences and contribute to the comparative analysis as part of the Mouse Genomes Project (http://www.sanger.ac.uk/resources/mouse/genomes/).
The Mouse Genomes Project is an ongoing effort to sequence the genomes of the common laboratory mouse strains, cataloging all forms of molecular variation, and to produce genome sequences of each strain. Phase 1 (2008-2011) of the project involved deep sequencing of the strains and creating comprehensive catalogs of molecular variation ranging from single base changes up to large structural differences of multiple kilobases (1, 2). We are now in phase 2 (2013-) of the project with the focus being the production of accurate genome sequences, strain specific gene annotation, and comparative analysis of an extended set of more recently sequenced strains (outbred, wild, and further laboratory strains).
The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute is a world leader in delivering large scale genome sequencing projects using the latest sequencing technologies. The Sequence Variation Infrastructure team work as part of the Computational Genomics programme with responsibility for development of highly used next-generation sequencing software packages (e.g. Samtools), development of systems to query across large volumes of sequencing data, contribute to the 1000 genomes project and the Global Alliance (http://genomicsandhealth.org) data working group, and lead the Mouse Genomes Project. One of the key challenges of this role will be to work on large sequencing datasets in parallel, whilst maintaining high data and analysis quality standards.
This role would suit somebody with some previous bioinformatics experience or a newly qualified graduate student who wishes to gain direct knowledge of next-generation sequencing technologies and analysis. The successful candidate will work closely with established team of analysts and developers so previous experience with next-generation sequencing data is not strictly necessary.

ABOUT US
The Sanger Institute is a charitably funded research centre focused on understanding the role of genetics in health and disease. We use state of the art large-scale genomic approaches to drive world-leading projects to uncover the basis of genetic and infectious disease. Our goal is to provide results that can be translated into diagnostics, treatments or therapies that reduce global health burdens.
The Institute is located near Cambridge, UK on the stunning Wellcome Trust Genome Campus. This growing and dynamic site is the British hub of genomic science. It hosts the European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI), the Centre for Therapeutic Target Validation, a Biodata Innovation Centre and will soon host Genomics England Limited's 100,000 Genomes Sequencing Centre. It is an excellent environment in which to work and collaborate with researchers on campus and around the world and benefit from cross-fertilisation of ideas.
To help researchers to develop their skills and networks, the Institute hosts a range of scientific seminars with internal and invited speakers, scientific group meetings and skills development workshops. In addition the Campus is home to the Wellcome Trust Advanced Course and Scientific Conferences programme and the Wellcome Trust Conference Centre.
