Opportunity: Senior Bioinformatician -- WormBase-ParaSite @ Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute -- Hinxton/Cambridge, UK
Submitted by Sam Bowker; posted on Monday, March 30, 2015

    BACKGROUND

We are seeking an experienced Senior Bioinformatician to help develop an exciting new resource for parasitic worm genomics at the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute.

Parasitic nematodes and flatworms are responsible for more than one billion human infections globally and have a devastating impact on livestock and agriculture. The parasite genomics group at the Sanger Institute has undertaken a major project to sequence the genomes of many parasitic worm species that have impact on human heath. We are collaborating with the WormBase team at EMBL European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI) on the provision of a new resource, WormBase-ParaSite (parasite.wormbase.org) that provides added-value annotation of these genomes sequences, and efficient and intuitive access to the data for parasitologists.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

The post-holder will be responsible for essential data analysis and integration activities for WormBase-ParaSite, including the deployment of established genome annotation and comparative analysis pipelines. They will also drive the next phase of development of the resource by identifying large-scale functional genomics data sets and developing software pipelines for their processing and integration across potentially hundreds of nematode and flatworm genomes. In addition to providing enormous utility to parasitic worm research, this exciting next phase of the project will be critical for laying foundations leading to sustainability and long-term funding.

    REQUIREMENTS

WormBase ParaSite is a sister project to the more established WormBase (http://www.wormbase.org) and Ensembl Genomes (http://www.ensemblgenomes.org) projects. As the resource makes heavy use of the Ensembl genomics infrastructure (http://www.wormbase.org), experience with Ensembl (specifically with the database schema and application programming interface) would be a distinct advantage. The post is also highly collaborative, and will involve working closely with other WormBase and WormBase-ParaSite staff both at the Sanger Institute and EMBL-EBI. Excellent communication skills are essential.

    Essential Skills:
    • Experienced in practical bioinformatics, either as part of PhD work or demonstrated by strong on-the-job training
    • Expertise in at least one programming language (e.g. Python or Perl)
    • Proficiency in Unix/Linux operating system
    • Experience analysing functional genomics experiments (especially RNASeq) Excellent communication skills
    • Highly developed problem solving skills
    • Detail oriented
    Ideal Skills:
    • Experience with using relational database systems
    • Experience with using compute cluster and batch queuing systems
    • Experience with software version control systems
    • Knowledge of parasitology
    • Experience with genome annotation methodologies and pipelines

    COMPENSATION

Salary range: GBP 30574 to GBP 38564 per annum plus excellent benefits.

Our Benefits include: Defined Benefit Pension Scheme, Group Income Protection, Healthcare scheme, Childcare Vouchers, Nursery and 25 days Annual Leave plus Bank Holidays. We also have a gym, two cafes, a nursery, dining facilities, and a free campus bus service. Our thriving Sports and Social Club provides many opportunities to meet with people working across the campus.

    TERMS

    Fixed-term until 17.01.17

    ABOUT US

The Sanger Institute is a charitably funded research centre focused on understanding the role of genetics in health and disease. We use state of the art large-scale genomic approaches to drive world-leading projects to uncover the basis of genetic and infectious disease. Our goal is to provide results that can be translated into diagnostics, treatments or therapies that reduce global health burdens.

The Institute is located near Cambridge, UK on the stunning Wellcome Trust Genome Campus. This growing and dynamic site is the British hub of genomic science. It hosts the European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI), the Centre for Therapeutic Target Validation, a Biodata Innovation Centre and will soon host Genomics England Limited's 100,000 Genomes Sequencing Centre. It is an excellent environment in which to work and collaborate with researchers on campus and around the world and benefit from cross-fertilisation of ideas.

To help researchers to develop their skills and networks, the Institute hosts a range of scientific seminars with internal and invited speakers, scientific group meetings and skills development workshops. In addition the Campus is home to the Wellcome Trust Advanced Course and Scientific Conferences programme and the Wellcome Trust Conference Centre.
