Opportunity: Post-doctoral position in Center for Human Health Assessment @ The Hamner Institutes -- Durham, NC (US)
Submitted by Kristin Overman; posted on Thursday, May 28, 2015

    BACKGROUND

The Hamner Institutes for Health Science is seeking motivated, self-driven individuals to work in the Center for Human Health Assessment as post-doctoral fellows. We are looking to fill three open positions.

In our new research program, we are developing an integrated computational modeling approach to better understand biomarkers of chemical exposure associated with human health effects observed in epidemiological studies. Our current focus is on reproductive health effects (altered timing of puberty, lower birthweight, and early onset of menopause) and disease conditions (thyroid disease and endometriosis). Our models integrate a variety of factors that determine chemical disposition in the body, including dynamic changes in human physiology, biology and exposure characteristics occurring over a life-time. Our approach will help to discern true effects of chemicals on health outcomes by determining whether hidden correlations between characteristics of a given health outcome and determinants of chemical kinetics can explain an observed epidemiological association. Incorporation of detailed physiological information for various life stages into the modeling platform is necessary to provide a quantitative evaluation of reported chemical-heath outcome associations. Our goal is to provide a scientifically sound tool to assess the potential for effects of chemicals on human health.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

This position entails the development and application of kinetic and statistical models that incorporate data from a variety of fields including physiology, biology, pharmacokinetics, toxicology, and exposure characterization to simulate chemical biomarkers in humans at the population level. The candidate will also work closely with other members in the team to analyze the model outcomes and compare them to actual epidemiological studies. She/he will have an opportunity to design experimental studies to validate the model assumptions.

    REQUIREMENTS

A Ph.D. degree is required. Preferred areas of study include pharmacokinetics, computer science, engineering, physics, biostatistics, or related field with a rigorous foundation in applied and quantitative science. Experience with at least one programming or scripting language is required and experience with computational modeling is preferred. Experience working with biological data (either computationally or experimentally) is preferred but not strictly required. Strong communication skills and a willingness to collaborate is a must.

    HOW TO APPLY

Qualified candidates need to submit their resume and General Application, which can be found at http://www.thehamner.org/careers/application-forms/, to koverman[at]thehamner.org or fax to 919-558-1430. Please refer to the "Postdoc CHHA" position.
