Opportunity: Senior Computational Scientist (#HH_00090) @ European Molecular Biology Laboratory -- Hamburg, Germany
Submitted by EMBL Recruitment; posted on Thursday, August 20, 2015

    BACKGROUND

The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) is one of the highest ranked scientific research organisations in the world. The Headquarters Laboratory is located in Heidelberg (Germany), with additional sites in Grenoble (France), Hamburg (Germany), Hinxton (UK) and Monterotondo (Italy).

The EMBL Hamburg Outstation at the DESY campus performs research in structural biology with specific emphasis on the use of synchrotron radiation. EMBL Hamburg runs two macromolecular crystallography (MX) beamlines and a Small Angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) beamline at the high-brilliance storage ring PETRA 3.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

Applications are invited for a Senior Computational Scientist position in the BioSAXS group of the EMBL. The successful applicant will be responsible for the design, coordination, implementation and deployment of software and method developments, ranging from integration of biophysical devices and methods at the BioSAXS beamline to data collection strategies and subsequent analysis methods. He/she will also be involved in the user support at a dedicated biological SAXS beamline P12 on PETRA 3 ring utilized by over a hundred groups per year. All beamline specific developments are to be coordinated with the MX beamline responsibles, as well as Computer and Instrumentation groups.

Methods development requires collaborative maintenance of the existing code base with the other members of the group with specific emphasis on the development of novel statistical and machine learning approaches for data analysis and validation.

    REQUIREMENTS

    Qualifications and Experience:
The ideal applicant should have a PhD in a relevant field and expertise in structure analysis of biological macromolecules using synchrotron X-ray scattering. Knowledge of X-ray hardware and/or data aquisition or analysis software is required. In addition, expert level knowledge of Fortran and C/C++ programming languages are essential. Additional profiency in Python would be an asset. Further, experience with MATLAB/Octave and/or R, as well as with high-performance grid and cluster computing would be beneficial. Good communication skills, fluent English and ability to collaborate with international teams are essential.
