BACKGROUND
The Centre for Applied Genomics at The Hospital for Sick Children is seeking a qualified individual to supervise the TCAG bioinformatics group. The successful candidate will join an existing team of 12 bioinformaticians, in a team lead role. This group is anticipated to expand over the next two years.
The Centre for Applied Genomics (TCAG; http://www.tcag.ca), is a genome centre in the Research Institute at The Hospital for Sick Children. Its mandate includes the provision of experimentation and analysis for investigators worldwide, as well as large-scale research on the genomics of neurodevelopmental disorders and the structural variation of the human genome.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Here's What You'll Get To Do:
- Prioritization of resources and time
- High-level oversight of multiple ongoing projects
- Interaction with the high performance computing group at The Hospital for Sick Children including making recommendations for new technologies and ensuring their timely implementation, strategic planning of resources and identification of alternative approaches (e.g. the use of outside high performance computing if and where possible), and scientific overview of all activities of the group
- Responsibilities in delivering results from service work for facility clients, and pipeline optimization
REQUIREMENTS
Here's What You'll Need:
- MSc or higher academic degree in Computer Science or Bioinformatics
- Experience with genomics data
- Prior experience with the analysis of next-generation DNA sequencing (NGS) data and operating in a high performance/cluster computing environment is strictly required.
- Demonstrated leadership skills and expertise, in an academic and/or private-sector setting
- Previous experience in a high-throughput genomics environment (Genome Centre) or high-performance computing facility is strongly preferred.
- Experience supporting a core facility or similar service laboratory will be an asset, as will experience in a GLP, GMP, ISO or similar regulatory environment.
- The ability to respond to critical deadlines is essential.

- Excellent verbal and written English language communication skills
- The TCAG bioinformatics group is a diverse set of individuals with backgrounds in the biological and computer sciences, the biotechnology industry, physics and other fields. The ability to integrate inputs from all of these individuals, recognize and capitalize on individual strengths and assist group members in developing areas of weakness, will be key to long-term success in this position.
