    Opportunity: Computing and Informatics Technician (#D08/15.SG) @ The Scottish Association for Marine Science -- Oban, UK

    BACKGROUND

    SAMS is seeking an enthusiastic person with skills in scientific computing and data management. Duties will be to support a broad range of scientific projects in all areas of marine science covering high performance computing, databases, bioinformatics and application development. Linux Administration, databaseSQL and strong scripting skills are essential; experience with bioinformatics software and application development would be of major benefit.

    Initially for 2 years, this post has potential to be extended as new scientific projects are awarded.

    Situated at Dunstaffnage on the beautiful west coast of Scotland, the area offers a range of activities for those who enjoy the outdoors. There is a nursery adjacent to SAMS as well as a visitor centre and café.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Provide direct Data Management, Development & Informatics support for Research Projects and Contracts: e.g. advice on data computing requirements of proposals, implementation of specialist Linux servers (e.g. Data delivery), creation of data processing workflows, Database design, development of applications ( e.g. web, mobile), non-standard cluster work, management of data, etc.
    • Manage, maintenance & administration high performance & general data managements systems, e.g. cluster , Big Data server.
    • Lead the development of an institutional Research Data Management regime, by designing & building systems and tools to implement the Data Lifecycle, apply data standards

    REQUIREMENTS

    Knowledge, Skills and Experience needed for the Job:

    A Bachelor's Degree or higher in computing or science and/or equivalent demonstrable experience. This would especially suit someone trained in informatics.

    Excellent working knowledge of:
    • GNU/Linux system administration (UbuntuCentOS preferred)
    • Scripting languages (Bash, Python, Perl etc.) and text manipulation tools (sed, awk, etc.)
    • Database Management Systems (e.g. MySQL, PostgreSQL, Microsoft Access)
    • High Performance computers (cluster and workstations)
    • Informatics (e.g. Bioinformatics or Chemo-informatics)
    Working Knowledge of:
    • ScientificResearch Data Management (e.g. Data Lifecycle, data standards)
    • Microsoft Windows and Office software
    • Networks and email system
    • Virtual Infrastructure Systems (e.g. VMware, Hyper-V)
    • Other operating systems
    Some experience of the following would be beneficial:
    • Web & application development (e.g. PHP, HTML5, javascript, ajax)
    • Advanced GIS skills (e.g. ArcGIS, QGIS, etc)
    Be able to:
    • Work as part of a team
    • Multi task
    • Prioritise tasks & use own initiative
    • Absorb & retain new information through learning on the job, self-learning & training
    • Train and guide unexperienced users (GNU/Linux, high performance equipment)
    Demonstrate:
    • Excellent communication skills in a frontline role
    • Flexibility in the role
    • A methodical approach to problem solving

    COMPENSATION

    Salary: GBP 28,143 to GBP 30,738 per annum
