Opportunity: Postdoctoral Research Fellow in computational and synthetic biology @ University of Edinburgh, UK
Submitted by Valentin Zulkower; posted on Monday, March 28, 2016

    BACKGROUND

The Cai lab is pioneering the area of large-scale DNA design and engineering. We are working on the largest synthetic chromosome to be made in the UK as a part of the Sc2.0 Project [http://www.syntheticyeast.org]. We also collaborate with the Edinburgh Genome Foundry (founded and co-directed by Dr. Cai), which was awarded GBP 5.5M from BBSRC to build a highly automated DNA assembly platform capable of producing up to chromosome-size DNA molecules at the University of Edinburgh. The assembly of large DNA constructs has many applications in genome engineering and phenotype-genotype interactions mapping, e.g. through chromosome scrambling [Dymond et al., Nature 2011; Annaluru et al., Science 2014; Shen et al., Genome Research 2016].

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    1. Developing novel computational methods to design and assemble large scale DNA sequences (30%)
    2. Developing computational methods to support large scale DNA synthesis and assembly automation (30%)
    3. Supervising/training and advising visiting research staff and postgraduate staff/students undertaking project work in the laboratory (10 %)
    4. Analysis of data for publication in international journals (20%)
    5. Presenting and critiquing data at regular group and departmental meetings (5%)
    6. Assist the PI preparing grant proposals (5%)

    REQUIREMENTS

    Essential:
    • A PhD (or shortly obtain a PhD) in Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, Process Engineering, Computer Science, or another relevant field.
    • Excellent knowledge of scientific computing using such as Python, R, Matlab, C++.
    • Proficient in bioinformatics algorithms
    • Understands the workflow of DNA synthesis and assembly

    PREFERENCES

    • Software development skills (web development, git).
    • Familiarity with DNA assembling methods (Gibson Assembly, Golden Gate).
    • Experience with High Performance Computing projects.
    • Excellent communication skills

    COMPENSATION

    GBP 31,656 - GBP 37,768 per annum
