Opportunity: Zoological Systematist Curator @ Computercraft Corporation -- Bethesda, MD (US)
Submitted by Computercraft Corporation; posted on Wednesday, June 15, 2016

    DESCRIPTION

Computercraft seeks a highly motivated biologist with experience in zoological taxonomy to join the small group of GenBank systematists that curate the Taxonomy Database. The GenBank Taxonomy Group is a part of the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) at the National Library of Medicine (NLM), National Institutes of Health (NIH). The Taxonomy Database, widely used by the international sequence database community, is a curated classification and nomenclature for all of the organisms in the public sequence databases: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/taxonomy

This is an exciting opportunity to improve resources and contribute to datasharing efforts in the scientific community. The successful candidate will work on-site at the National Institutes of Health Campus in Bethesda, Maryland.

This position requires a PhD with a broad knowledge of zoological systematics and the latest taxonomic literature. Familiarity with phylogenetic systematics and zoological nomenclature is strongly desired and experience in vertebrate or invertebrate taxonomy is preferred. Database curation includes verifying taxon names, ensuring that classification is consistent with current consensus, and interacting with sequence annotators, submitters and members of the relevant research communities. Some of the candidate's time will be available for independent research. Teamwork interaction, excellent verbal communication as well as written and organizational skills are essential for this position.

Computercraft offers a competitive salary, excellent benefits package, the opportunity for excellent work-life balance with a standard 40 hour work week, and the chance to work with accomplished scientists at NIH/NCBI.
