BACKGROUND
The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) is one of the highest ranked scientific research organisations in the world. The Headquarters Laboratory is located in Heidelberg (Germany), with additional sites in Grenoble (France), Hamburg (Germany), Hinxton (UK) and Monterotondo (Italy).
RESPONSIBILITIES
We are seeking a highly motivated Bioinformatics Developer to join the group of Peer Bork within the Structural and Computational Biology Unit. The main focus of the group is to gain insights into the functioning of biological systems and their evolution by comparative analysis and integration of complex molecular data. The postholder's duties include the development and maintenance of biological software and databases as well as WEB front ends. The position will also involve large-scale data handling (e.g. NGS data) and analysis. Additional duties include Bioinformatics and IT support of our and other groups, the latter partly within collaborative frameworks worldwide. Application areas will be (meta) genomic annotation, molecular interaction networks and microbiomics.
REQUIREMENTS
Qualifications and Experience:
In addition to a Masters degree in Bioinformatics, IT, Biology or related field, the applicant should have extensive knowledge in the use of Linux/Unix, Windows and Mac platforms as well as sufficient biological background. The position further requires substantial experience in scripting/software development (e.g. Perl, Python, C++), Web design, handling of biological databases (e.g. mySQL, PostgreSQL) as well as HPC computing (e.g. job scheduling). The proven ability to work in a team at the interface between biology and informatics is essential. Very good organizational and communication skills are desired. In addition, good command of English language, the working language of EMBL, is required.
