Opportunity: Sr. Scientist, Applied Data Sciences @ Eisai Pharmaecuticals -- Andover, MA (US)
Submitted by Leigh Steele; posted on Monday, August 01, 2016

    BACKGROUND

Eisai Inc. has recently launched a new, autonomous and dedicated R&D innovation unit of over 80 scientists focused on integrating our diverse scientific strengths to deliver novel targeted medicines, discovered and robustly validated by human genetics and related sources, to patients.

This Andover, MA, unit is premised upon three strategic pillars (human biology, chemistry innovation and entrepreneurial collaboration) and organized around four scientific engines (Human Biology and Data Sciences; Integrated Biology; Integrated Chemistry; Imaging Center of Excellence). The predominant research focus of the new unit is precision medicine therapeutics for the subset of dementia and oncology patients with immune-driven pathology (ie, immunodementia and immunooncology), with a sharp strategic focus on employing entrepreneurial collaborative and business models to accelerate delivery of innovative medicines that address unmet patient needs.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

The Senior Scientist within Applied Data Sciences is responsible for developing innovative solutions for target and biomarker identification and validation. He/she contributes to design and analysis of pre-clinical and clinical (exploratory) experiments supporting projects in oncology and neurology, performs data integration and interpretation, and leads efforts aimed at data-driven discovery of novel biomarkers and precision medicine strategies. Both internal and public data sources will be analyzed in order to inform portfolio decisions by rigorously evaluating human biology evidence supporting potential targets and biomarkers. In addition, he/she will provide recommendations of novel analytic methods and promising technologies to improve the team's productivity. This position requires excellent data science skills in the areas of data integration, data mining, data interpretation, and data analysis using internal or external data sources.

    Essential Functions:
    • Lead core applied data science activities including data handling, data integration, and data analysis from multi-omics data, including genetics, genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, and other omics data.
    • Develop and implement state of the art data science methods, pipelines, policies, and procedures that contribute to medicines creation platforms. Educate other applied data science team members on these approaches.
    • Design and analyze preclinical experiments to guide clinical precision medicine strategies. Analyze clinical data to inform precision medicine strategies for current and future development programs.
    • Provide experimental design and analysis as an embedded member of internal cross-functional or global project teams.
    • Prepare technical reports including analysis plans, versioned analysis code, statistical methodology, and publications and conference presentations.

    REQUIREMENTS

    • Ph.D. degree in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Statistical Genetics, Genetic Epidemiology, Data Science, or closely related field with equivalent experience
    • Must have 3-5 years of relevant experience analyzing multi-omics data. Industry experience is required.
    • Must demonstrate expertise in analytics tools for functional genomics and transcriptomics including whole genome sequencing, expression data (including RNAseq), and epigenetics data. Additional statistical genetics experience highly preferred.
    • Must have experience applying knowledge-based or data-driven methods for data interpretation (e.g. pathway and network analysis)
    • Must demonstrate advanced analytical and troubleshooting skills and expertise to interpret signals and potential issues with multi-omics data
    • Must have applied experience with advanced statistical methods, i.e., predictive analytics models
    • Must have strong communication skills and the ability to act on cross-disciplinary teams
    • Requires experience with extensive programing skills using R, Python, and Unix/Linux scripting
