BACKGROUND
The GW Medical Informatics Center is seeking a highly motivated individual with a strong background in computational science and programming skills to fill a junior or mid-level software developer position. Medical informatics is an interdisciplinary field focusing on the resources, devices, and methods required to optimize the acquisition, storage, retrieval, and use of information in health and biomedicine. The mission of GW Medical Informatics Center is to enhance individual and population health outcomes, improve patient care, and strengthen the clinician-patient relationship through the research and development of data science and information technology.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Perform programming tasks for software development
- Apply and customize existing software tools for new use cases and datasets
- Document software requirements and functions
- Test and debug software modules
- Participate in other research activities (including study design and manuscript preparation) as needed.
- Performs other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position
REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor's degree in an appropriate area of specialization plus 5 years of relevant professional experience. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience
PREFERENCES
- 2+ years programming experience
- 1+ year experience in Java
- Fluent in English
- Results-driven, self-starter
- Must be able to learn new applications/programs/technologies quickly
- Skills in problem solving, attention to detail, and organization
- Ability to handle multiple tasks with changing priorities and deadlines in a fast paced environment
- Ability to maintain positive working relationships
- Ability to communicate effectively with co-workers and supervisors
- Prior course work and experience in machine learning, natural language processing/information extraction, and database
- 2+ years java programming experience
- Experience working in research or industry settings
- MS in computer science, mathematics, engineering or a related field
- Experience troubleshooting technical hardware and software issues in systems and applications
