Opportunity: PhD scholarship at DTU Bioinformatics @ Technical University of Denmark -- Copenhagen, Denmark
Submitted by Signatur AS; posted on Tuesday, October 04, 2016

    BACKGROUND

A PhD position is available at the newly formed Department of Bio and Health Informatics (DTU Bioinformatics) at the Technical University of Denmark within the areas of Health bioinformatics. The position is in collaboration with the Sino-Danish Center for Education and Research (SDC). The research in this position will be focused on integrating patient derived data, towards understanding disease aetiology and treatment responses. The application of data integrative and machine learning techniques will be required to combine baseline genetic data and environmental exposures with gene expression, metabolomics, metagenomics and early treatment responses, in order to build models predictive of late effects.

The external stay in China will be in close collaboration with Prof. Xiu-Jie Wang at Institute of Genetics and Development of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing. Prof. Xiu-Jie Wang's group is experienced in high-throughput sequencing data analysis and functional gene identification, with special emphasis on epigenetic regulation aspects. The institute has efficient sequencing, computing, imaging, functional validation and other facilities. The group has a close network with scientists and facilities in other institutes of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Additional Chinese partners include BGI-Shenzhen, one of the largest high-throughput sequencing and genomics facilities in the world.

    DTU Bioinformatics:
The research at DTU Bioinformatics is focused on benefitting from the wealth of new data and data types being generated within Life Science to improve human and animal health and develop solutions to problems of biotechnological and industrial interest. A cornerstone in achieving this is the dedicated effort within DTU Bioinformatics to develop artificial intelligence and machine learning solutions to the challenge of handling and interpreting large scale and heterogeneous data. A focus of the department is to design and develop new methodologies to meet the challenges of the amount and the complexity of big data within the health sector.

    REQUIREMENTS

Candidates should have a scientifically relevant master's degree in engineering/natural sciences or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master's degree. Candidates will be expected to have either a strong computational background or a strong biological background with an interest in addressing diseases and treatment. Some programming experience or education is required. Prior project work is expected, and having participated in publications is an advantage.

Strong communication skills are favoured and a strong academic record is an advantage.
The applicant should strive towards developing scientific skills at the highest level, be ambitious and hard working. Only applicants with great talent and a possibility to be among the brightest in their field will be considered.

There is a requirement to spend nine months in China over the three years PhD period. Due to the requirement for cultural and scientific exchange between Denmark and China, Chinese applicants cannot be considered for this position.
