Opportunity: Postdoctoral Fellow (#11918) @ Augusta University -- Augusta, GA (US)
Submitted by Veeta Perry; posted on Tuesday, October 11, 2016

    DESCRIPTION

This post-doctoral position will be a Scientific Data Curator (SDC) and will work closely with AU scientists and staff to push forward our vision of open and reproducible research for the Mouse Metabolic Phenotyping Centers (MMPC) and Diabetic Complications Consortium (DiaComp). The SDC will have experience and a passion for working with big data-sets. The work will be performed in a dynamic environment, working directly with research scientists across the country to evaluate the data generated by the MMPC and DiaComp. Challenges will include dealing with unusual data-sets and unique experimental designs and accurately representing them in the consortia websites. The SDC will be trusted to manage relations with researchers submitting data and accurately represent their data-sets with high degree of independence. The SDC should be comfortable working with people and have strong communication skills.

The successful candidate will have thorough biological knowledge, including familiarity with high-throughput experimental methodologies, large genomic data sets, and their analysis in order to successfully describe these data. Prior laboratory experience generating and analyzing genomic data-sets is desired. Familiarity with the use of controlled vocabularies and ontologies to describe biological concepts is a plus. This individual will be also responsible for working with other software engineering staff in the specification, design, and implementation of tools that integrate, search, and display these data.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills are essential in order to (1) interact effectively with members of the scientific community, (2) facilitate the acquisition and description of scientific data, (3) effectively provide documentation and specifications to coworkers during tool development, and (4) contribute to publications and tutorials.

    Duties include:
    1. Assist in the creation of databases and query tools for data mining.
    2. Produce documentation regarding effective use of the database.
    3. Respond to user requests.
    4. Identify and collate new data for inclusion in the database.
    5. Review submissions to the database for quality and relevancy; abstract information in the required formats.
    6. Maintain quality control and integrity of current and archived data.
    7. Assist with the preparation of reports and publications about the research progress.
    8. Collaborate with research personnel in collating data for presentations and demonstrations of the database at conferences or other institutions.
    9. Collect and analyze information, abstract data into the required format, and verify them for accuracy.
