Status of Anonymous CVS on the WWW Server
Submitted by J.W. Bizzaro; posted on Friday, January 05, 2001
Submitter There is a problem with anonymous CVS that appears to be caused by a bug in CVS itself, at least the version we're using on our system. The bug prevents anonymous CVS from working correctly when SSH is installed, or so it seems.

A user would get the following error attempting a login:

---------------------
$ cvs -d:pserver:anonymous[at]bioinformatics.org:/cvsroot/ login
(Logging in to anonymous[at]bioinformatics.org)
CVS password:
cvs [login aborted]: unrecognized auth response from bioinformatics.org: CVS commands are:
---------------------

If anyone knows what causes this error, please contact us at admins[at]bioinformatics.org.

We have a solution to this, which is to use a separate server for CVS, one that does not also use SSH. We set the server up a while back, but a script kiddie set the whole process back a bit.

We can have anonymous CVS up and running at any point now. We just wanted to be sure the system is secure enough to depend on.

Also, the system will soon be automatically generating snapshots of CVS modules and placing them in anonymous FTP. This is the functional equivalent of anonymous CVS, and people won't need a CVS client to get snapshots, but we do need to get anonymous CVS working.
