    Education: Introductory course in bioinformatics--Kenya

    Organized by the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI), Biosciences East and Central Africa (BECA) and the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU)

    OBJECTIVES

    The ILRI-BECA EMBNet node is presenting an introductory course in Bioinformatics for scientists in East and Central Africa in collaboration with SLU, funded by FORMAS-SIDA. The objective of the course is to introduce young scientists to, and encourage application of, bioinformatics/computational biology in their research and to present some of the biological resources available on the ILRI-BECA bioinformatics platform.

    TOPICS

    • Sequence analysis and alignments
    • Comparative genomics using Artemis and Artemis Comparison Tool
    • Biological databases and database formats
    • wEMBOSS - a web interface to the popular EMBOSS software package for biological sequence analysis.
    • Bioclipse - workbench for chemo- and bioinformatics
    • Taverna webservices
    • Ensembl - a software system that produces and maintains automatic annotation of eukaryotic genomes.
    • Staden package - a series of tools for DNA sequence preparation, assembly, editing and DNA/protein sequence analysis

    COST

    There is no cost for the course, and all material and refreshments during the course are free. All travel and accommodation costs to be covered by participants.

    HOW TO APPLY

    As only 25 participants can be accepted, participants will be selected from as wide as possible a range of institutions/groups. In order to be considered, please register before 23 February 2007. Successful participants will be notified by 26 February 2007.
