Opportunity: Bioinformatics Specialist at University of Washington--Seattle, WA (US)

BACKGROUND
The Eichler Laboratory, a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Laboratory located at the University of Washington in Seattle, WA, is seeking a BIOINFORMATICS SPECIALIST. This person will develop computational methods to assess the organization of recent segmental duplications and their association with structural rearrangements between and within species.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Maintain/Administer mySQL database servers and genome browsers with a mySQL backend.
- Develop and maintain a computational pipeline to detect duplications and structural variation within whole-genome shotgun sequence data and assembly data generated from whole genome sequencing projects.
- Develop statistical analyses to test the significance of genome-wide associates.
- Construct specialized mySQL databases for the collection and comparison of sequence properties.
- Develop software (programs and/or scripts including graphical visualization software) and html interfaces that facilitate large-scale data-mining of genome, genetic and expression databases and distribution of analysis.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
Supervise (1-2) junior-level programmer analysts as well as computational students.
REQUIREMENTS
Masters degree in Computer Science and at least 2 years in genomics research as demonstrated by a publication record. Extensive programming experience in 2 or more computational programming languages (C/C++, Perl, Java, SQL). Experience with existing bioinformatics DNA sequence analysis software including local and global sequence alignment searches, multiple sequence alignment construction and phylogenetic analysis software. Training in algorithm design, data structures and implementation, especially in string manipulation. Knowledge of Linux/Unix, Windows, html and mySQL database structure. Ability to perform independent analyses and report findings to both national and international groups. Ability to work independently as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
PREFERENCES
Experience with bioinformatics tools, including BLAST, CLUSTALW and MEGA a plus. Experience in data-mining of whole-genome shotgun sequence data analysis using a multiprocessor PC cluster farm configuration.
MPI Programming
Previous work as part of genome project consortia.
