    Opportunity: Bioinformatics Analyst @ Vanderbilt University--Nashville, TN (US)

    BACKGROUND

    We are seeking an experienced Bioinformatics Scientist to work directly with principal investigators on genetics of complex, disease predisposing genes.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    • With limited guidance, data mining and integration to support the identification of candidate genes for further analysis.
    • Annotation of genomic regions of interest for biomarkers, genomic intervals, genes, genetic markers (SNPs), CNV data, and data generated from internal experiments.
    • Design and implement data analysis methodologies through hands-on programming.
    • Recognizes and communicates promising ideas.

    REQUIREMENTS

    • Possess a degree (B.S./M.S./Ph.D) in biology or bioinformatics. Masters level or higher preferred.
    • Minimum of 2 years direct experience in a research environment.

    KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS

    • Ability to integrate a wide variety of information from biological databases and to develop a thorough understanding of disease-relevant biological pathways and gene networks.
    • 2-3 years experience with scripting language(s), preferably Perl. Substantial experience with software packages for writing, organizing and illustrating data, including Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop and Acrobat; and MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint). Experience in web site development using a html scripting language such as PHP. Experience with DNA/protein sequence analysis using both desktop and web-based applications. Ideal candidates will have experience with multiple operating system platforms (MacOS, Windows, Unix/Linux).
    • A comprehensive knowledge of genetics and genomics is required, including skills for integrating and analyzing different data types with respect to elements of gene structure and DNA and amino acid sequence.
    • Data-mining from biological database resources such as NCBI, PUBMED, genome browser databases (UCSC, Ensembl) for biomarkers, genomic intervals, genes, genetic markers (SNPs), CNV data. This can include bulk extraction of said data and integration across different data types.
    • Ability to read and comprehend relevant genetics/genomics, disease-related and other biological literature.
    • Relational database experience with open source database like MySQL in order to manage data for projects.
    • Excellent written, verbal and organizational skills.
