Opportunity: Software Developer Job with Stanford University
Submitted by Susan Becker; posted on Wednesday, June 27, 2007

    BACKGROUND:
As the oldest medical school in the western United States, the Stanford School of Medicine is devoted to the training of physicians and scientists and the clinical practice and research efforts of those who are shaping the future of medicine and science. Our Department of Developmental Biology currently has an excellent opportunity available for a Software Developer/Programmer.

    RESPONSIBILITIES:
In this new position, you will work to support and empower a new research laboratory that will be critical to improving our understanding of the functional landscape of the Human Genome, its evolution and its contribution to human disease. The lab is a joint effort between Developmental Biology where it sits and Computer Science where its powerful Linux cluster resides. We'll rely on you to program stand alone tools in a standard language, as well as CGI scripts and database loaders in C, test and debug programs, work with a large Linux cluster and program in a Linux environment. You will also be expected to maintain and enhance common tools developed and deployed by the lab, particularly maintaining a subversion mirror site of the UC Santa Cruz genome browser and underlying MySQL database. You will also maintain local mirror site integrity while adding and supporting local tracks, CGI event and display handlers and hooks for ongoing local code development; manage and enhance the lab website; document common tools and procedures on lab wiki, interface with MySQL; maintain local database integrity and adjust software to optimize database performance.

    REQUIREMENTS:
This challenging assignment requires a team player with BA/BS in CS with 2-3 years of relevant experience and 1 year of college-level biology. Significant experience working with C in a UNIX or Linux environment is essential, along with strong communication skills and the ability to work under pressure in conjunction with one or more deadlines. Knowledge of bioinformatics methods and applications or a strong desire to learn them and an ability to study and assimilate technical structure, data and requirements of genome analysis software is also necessary.

    PREFERENCES:
Preferred candidates will have knowledge or experience in molecular biology, extensive experience in programming languages in addition to C, debugging skills, knowledge of CGI programming and source control practices and the ability to master a complex, evolving code base.

    LOCALE:
Stanford, CA (Northern California - SF Bay Area)

    HOW TO APPLY:
To assure your application information is captured in our official files and that the hiring department also has immediate access to your resume and cover letter (required), you must apply to http://jobs.stanford.edu and in the keyword search box, indicate 25508. Stanford University is an affirmative action, equal opportunity employer.
