SANBI specializes in research into gene expression and disease. As such, it’s projects span the fields of HIV vaccine development, diabetes disease gene detection and discovery of genes involved in initiation of cancers. Recently, SANBI has opened a pathogen bioinformatics centre, headed by Professor Winston Hide and a team of internationally renowned scientists, and funded by the SA Medical research council.

Please see the SANBI website (http://www.sanbi.ac.za) for further information; the website of the University of the Western Cape (http://www.uwc.ac.za) has additional information about the environment.
