Opportunity: Post-doctoral research fellowship, computational biology / probabilistic analysis, ageing--Vienna, Austria
Submitted by D Kreil; posted on Thursday, December 13, 2007

    Submitter

    BACKGROUND

We are looking for a skilled and enthusiastic researcher to join our team as data analysis expert in an investigation of the molecular determinants of ageing. See http://www.biotec.boku.ac.at/biageing.html?&L=1 for further details.

We are a young group focussing on the challenge of extracting structured insight from high-throughput experiments (microarrays, proteomics, ), taking a quantitative approach in the lab and applying probabilistic models in analysis. Our biological interests are varied, and include clinical applications as well as basic research, such as an investigation of non genetic sources of individuality in fruit-flies. While travel is not necessary, we have active collaborations with Cambridge, UK, and the U.S., and encourage exchange with our partners. Vienna is a thriving international city with a vibrant scientific environment and outstanding quality of life.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

A particular goal in this project is the implementation and application of probabilistic approaches for an analysis of microarray time-course experiments to reveal static and temporal patterns that are related to ageing processes.

    REQUIREMENTS & PREFERENCES

Successful candidates are expected to hold a PhD degree in a technical or scientific field and must be able to demonstrate a track record in data analysis with probabilistic machine learning or Bayesian statistics. The new group member will develop novel approaches for probabilistic inference using R or MatLab / Octave. Profound knowledge of a development environment for numerical computation is required. Experience with data analysis in a biomedical or life-science domain is seen as a considerable advantage. The project requires regular interaction with biologists, such as assisting in the planning of well-designed experiments and taking personal responsibility for the full data analysis process. An interest in collaborating with researchers from other domains and excellent communication skills in English are thus essential.

    TERMS

The position is available immediately and has an initial tenure of two years, with extensions possible.

    LOCALE

Chair of Bioinformatics, Boku University Vienna, Austria

    COMPENSATION

We can offer a salary on the standard national scale for academics (about 39k gross). All employments include full benefits.

    HOW TO APPLY

Please include a cover letter, a curriculum vitae, a list of publications, and the names of three referees, who should be asked to send references to us directly. Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions. Applications should be addressed to our head of analytical methods development, Peter Sykacek, ideally by email.

    DEADLINE

We look forward to receiving your application by 15 January 2008. Short listed candidates will be notified and invited for interview. Late applications may be considered until the position has been filled.
