Opportunity: Bioinformatics and Biostatstics positions open (entry level and middle level)--Trieste, Italy
Submitted by Elia Stupka; posted on Wednesday, April 09, 2008

    BACKGROUND

CBM is a fast growing company including academic and private partners providing services to the biomedical arena in the fields of genomics, bioinformatics, imaging and nanomedicine. If you are interested in working on multidisciplinary projects that span across industry, academia and healthcare, you've come to the right place!

    RESPONSIBILITIES

We are seeking to recruit several positions within the fields of bioinformatics and biostatistics at both entry and middle level. All the positions will be working closely with customers and collaborators, and will be responsible for developing and/or implementing strategies for the analysis, integration and presentation of biological and medical data. More specifically currently the service focuses on the analysis and presentation of:
    • expression profiling data (Affymetrix and Illumiina)
    • genotyping data (Affymetrix and Illumina)
    • design and analysis of custom arrays (Nimblegen and Combimatrix)
    • analysis of optical imaging data (GE Optix)
    • analysis of next generation sequencing data (454 and Solexa) for both medical re-sequencing as well as small RNA sequencing

    REQUIREMENTS

Through interactions with members of the bioinformatics team the candidate will keep up to date with the latest tools and software needed to process the data. This individual will regularly interact with academic and industrial researchers and thought leaders and their teams in collaborative projects, developing new experimental and analysis strategies.

Additional responsibilities include the development of analysis pipelines and collaboration with web developers to deliver the results in an automated manner through the CBM portal, the independet handling of specific projects, and pertaining schedules and customer contacts, evaluation of open source software packages as they are being released,

The interdisciplinary nature of the positions requires solid foundations in at least two of biology, informatics, statistics for the senior positions, and at least one for the entry level positions.

Senior candidates will be expected to hold a PhD or equivalent work experience, with a record of scientific publications, while entry level candidates will be expected to have an outstanding academic curriculum and some relevant project experience.

Additionally, candidates will be expected to demonstrate the ability to work in a UNIX/Linux environment and be proficient with a scripting language (e.g. Perl/Phyton) and/or software programming languages (e.g. C/C++/Java).

Previous experience with genomics databases will be required for senior candidates and is desirable for entry level candidates. Previous experience with next generation sequencing data is a desirable asset.

An appreciation of the use of statistical methods and mathematical models in the interpretation of biological data is important for the biostatistics positions.
