Opportunity: Postdoctoral Research Position in Epigenomics @ Columbia U--New York, NY (US)
Submitted by Fatemeh Haghighi, Ph.D.; posted on Wednesday, August 06, 2008

    BACKGROUND

A postdoctoral position is available in computational epigenomics in the laboratory of Professor Fatemeh Haghighi at Columbia University and the New York State Psychiatric Institute. The research is focused on the development and application of computational and statistical algorithms for epigenetic analysis of neuropsychiatric disorders. Studies involve bioinformatic analysis of data from whole genome DNA methylation profiles to detect differentially methylated regions associated with disease and their potential function through genomic datamining. Other large dataset discovery problems are also of interest including mRNA gene expression and histone methylation.

    REQUIREMENTS

Job requirements include a strong quantitative background with a Ph.D. in bioinformatics/computational biology, computer science, applied mathematics, statistics, or physics; and significant experience in scientific computation working on biological problems. Candidates with a Ph.D. in the biological sciences with strong quantitative training will also be considered. Priority will be given to candidates with demonstrated expertise in bioinformatics and database design, sequence analysis including database similarity searches, sequence alignments, as well as motif and evolutionary analysis. A good publication record is preferable.

The candidate must have a solid background in statistics (familiarity with R or S/Plus), knowledge of machine learning techniques, and programming expertise in Java and/or C++ and Perl. The selected candidate will be a highly motivated individual with excellent written and verbal communication skills, capable of working independently and within a larger multidisciplinary team. All applicants must currently be eligible to work in the U.S.

    LOCALE: New York, NY, USA

TERMS: 2 years with possible extension.

    COMPENSATION

    Commensurate with qualification and experience.

    HOW TO APPLY
